MAC By Request

I have some very exciting news that came in my inbox the other morning!  We all know (and often lament) that MAC comes out with a series of limited edition collections every single year.  We all have fallen in love with at least one or two shades from these collections that we bought once and then the product was sold out by the time that we go back to try and buy a back up product.  MAC has finally begin to listen to us and hence the birth of By Request!

By Request is a small group of limited edition shades that MAC is having their fans vote on and will release the winners for a second round.  I received an email about this collection, it is not listed on the website.  You have to vote via Facebook or your mobile phone, there is a link in the email taking to you to the voting area.  I am currently on the MAC Facebook page and am looking at these shades from this link.
"Bring back your favorite discontinued shades of Lipstick, Lipglass, and Eye Shadow!  Vote for them March 12 - 30.  The top 9 shades will be available to purchase in August.  Only one vote per category, per person, per day."  I originally was hoping that this was a write-in contest since I have been lamenting Way To Love since the middle of 2009 and still haven't found a dupe for it.

I did find a link to this contest on the MAC website when I was pulling up the product descriptions but you have to go to the product itself and then follow through on the link.  The Facebook page seems to be the easiest way to vote for your shades.  I voted for the following: Lipstick - Candy Yum Yum; Lipglass - 2N; and Eye Shadow - Heavenly Bliss.  I missed all of these shades the first time around, in fact some of Lipstick shades were first released when I began high school and was nowhere close to using MAC makeup.  Candy Yum Yum is an awesome matte bright pink and it wasn't my type of shade when the collection was released last April but now it is just the type of shade that I have been wearing this whole spring.  2N is a great neutral gloss that will work well against a strong eye or for everyday makeup looks.  The same applies for Heavenly Bliss, I will use this shade all the time, it will work well with almost every neutral shade that I own.

The rules state that you can only vote once a day, so if there is a shade or two that you really love and want to see again then I recommend voting every single day!

Bobbi Brown Spring 2012 Collection - Rose Gold Collection

The Bobbi Brown Spring 2012 collection is based around one of the big trends in jewelry that we started seeing last fall and hasn't lost any popularity over the past few months.  Last fall, I started seeing rose gold colored jewelry in all of the fall fashion magazines and that trend later spread to nail polish.  This spring, Bobbi Brown is taking this shade to the extreme and basing her entire spring color collection around it.  This shade is said to be universally flattering to every skin tone and easier to wear than many other hues of gold.  I could barely wear gold shades to begin with so it remains to be seen if this actually is an improvement for someone with my pale, cool skintone or if this will be a collection best suited to those of us with a warmer skintone and a bit of a tan all the time.

After seeing this collection for the first time, I decided to play around with some items that I already own and see if I could create a rose gold look.  I used a pink-gold eye shadow (MAC Et Tu Bouquet from A Rose Romance) and a true gold eye shadow (Urban Decay Deluxe Eye Shadow In Honey) to try and get the look on the model for this collection.  I loved the look on my eyes but I don't know how well it would work on my cheeks and lips.  However I am so excited to try some of these shades out on my eyes!  However it does appear that this collection contains more face and lip products than eye products so I am a bit disappointed in this area.

I think that this collection might be my first time purchasing a Shimmer Brick from this company, however I would use it only on my eyes instead of all over my face.  I love the Rose Gold shade and this will be the perfect addition to my collection of products that I have been using to create the pink gold eye makeup look.  I was hoping for a bit more variety in the eye makeup shades and I was disappointed that I couldn't find single shades with the rose gold cast, I guess that I will just buy the Shimmer Brick and hope that it performs at the same level on the eyes as it does on the face.  I bet that I will end up buying the Rose Gold shade of Shimmer Eye Shadow, I hope that it works well with the Rose Gold Shimmer Brick.

I am excited to see a large variety of lip gloss products and shades available in the collection, I have little experience with Bobbi Brown's makeup but I have heard so many positive comments about her lip products and I know so many beauty ladies that adore her formulas.  From the Rich Color Gloss formula, I really love the Pink Gold and Angel Pink shades, I hope that the Pink Gold isn't too warm for my skintone.  From the traditional Lip Gloss formula, I love the Confetti Pink shade, I love this shimmery pink shade and I think that it is sheer enough that I can safely wear it now and then all the way into the summer season. 

I really like this collection and I love how wearable the shades in it are.  Until I started playing with a rosy gold eye look, I never knew how much I loved this combination of shades.  I have been wearing my combination of these shades for the past few days and I still continue to love the results.  I need to try more products from Bobbi Brown, I have a small counter from this company in my local Macy*s but it is hidden behind the MAC counter and I often forget that it exists until I walk right by it...after buying a pile of stuff from MAC.  Time to keep walking past the MAC counter...

Anna Paquin's Hair Color

I am still on the fence about going blond.  My initial thought was to start lightening my hair to an ice blond shade, a la Pam from True Blood.  I am now beginning to wonder if that look is much to dramatic and will require more upkeep than I have time for.  And how much it will wreck my hair at the same time.

I am now looking more at the shade of Anna Paquin's hair, still blonde but a few hues darker and more highlighted.  I still don't know that I could get all the way to this blonde shade but I am thinking that highlights could begin to get me to this shade instead of the full bleaching that the ash blonde would require.

Looking for some feedback...

Chanel Las Vegas de Chanel Collection

Is the new trend for Chanel to be releasing small collections that are associated with major cities?  In the middle of winter, they released the Knightsbridge Collection, a small collection that was created to celebrate some of the landmarks of London.  Now they have released a collection based on Las Vegas, Las Vegas de Chanel.  This collection consists of four products, all of which are gold or have some gold hue in them.  I laughed when I first saw this collection, I finished reading Cat in a Vegas Gold Vendetta by Carol Nelson Douglas a few weeks ago and the color "Vegas Gold" is apparently a real hue and a big deal in that city.  This collection actually brought the book to my mind before even thinking about the MGM Lion or the big casinos on the Strip.  I have wanted to go to Las Vegas for quite a long time now but have never been able to go.  Hopefully that will change in the next five years...

As I stated above, this collection is all about gold and gilded makeup.  I can see myself easily pulling off one of two pieces of this collection at a time but I think that I would resemble a Vegas showgirl if I tried to wear all four pieces at once.  Perhaps this is what women wear when they go all out at night in this city, I wouldn't know since I have never been there.  However, I am thinking that many of the shades in this collection would work very well with red lip shades and I bet that I will be adding a few to my makeup collection.

I am in love with the face and eye palette from this collection, I would use it mostly on my eyes.  All of the hues in it would set off my blue eyes and I can see myself getting so much use from this product.  Now I have to visit my Chanel counter and see if this collection will be carried all over or if I will have to go to Chanel boutique (closest one is well over an hour away) to get my hands on this product.  I am thinking that it might be worth the travel time since every shade will work well with eye makeup shades that I already own.  I like both the lipstick and the nail polish but I would like to try the lipstick out first since I am concerned that it might be too warm to be flattering for me.  Of course, these shades will work better once I begin self tanning for the summer.

Zoya Spring 2012 Collection - True Collection

With my current craze for nail polish, I have been spending a lot more time on the Nail Board of Makeup Alley and the Scrange Nail Polish blog.  In addition to just looking at China Glaze shades, I have been seeing lots of different brands that I hadn't really heard of before.  When I really thought about it, before looking into China Glaze and really getting into polishes, the only brands that I really used and knew about were OPI, Deborah Lippmann, and Chanel.  But I am happy to note that I am seeing all kinds of different brands now and my nail polish collection is growing faster than any other type. 

One of the brands that I see lots of raves about in both of those places is the Zoya brand of polishes, I have only ever seen this line at Ulta and the display wasn't near the size of the OPI or Essie displays.  This line combines the best of both worlds, it is available in salons so I know that the quality needs to pass muster from many stylists however I can still buy it at Ulta and order it from the company website so I am not running around in circles trying to find certain shades of it (my current issue with China Glaze).  As long as my local Ulta has a good selection of these shades than I will be happily collecting these polishes for the next few months.

I haven't gotten to try any of these polishes yet so I decided to start by looking at the new spring collection and seeing if there are a few shades that are worth the trip to Ulta.  Between the past two China Glaze releases and the Butter London polishes, my next trip to Ulta is going to be quite hard on my wallet...

The new collection is named True Collection and it consists of six new polishes that are sold individually and in a set of all six.  The collection contains three light to medium shades and three deeper toned shades.  The deeper toned shades could be considered jewel tones since these formula contain a shimmer element to the finish.

- Tru - A saturated, red-toned grape purple with speckled shimmer that reflects gold, orange, and red.  Bold and saturated warm color made even more interesting with color-shifting shimmer.  Cool.  Metallic.
- Lotus - A very soft, dusty blue-toned amethyst purple with colorful shimmer that reflects pink, red, and gold.  A dreamy, smoky shade for purple lovers that looks both soft and luminous.  Cool and warm.  Metallic.

I love love love these shade descriptions, all the detials that this company provides makes it almost impossible to order a shade that looks nothing like the picture.  I also love that the company provides details as to what skintones it will flatter and the warmth/coolness is commented on.  I had made too many errors with ordering shades that are much warmer than they look on the websites.  I have never seen a company that provides so many details to their customers, it seems like this company genuinely wants their customers to pick the right shade the first time.  I would not hesitate to order shades from this company.

I have two favorites from this collection, one green and one blue.  Bevin is the dirty green shade, I own nothing like this and I don't even think that I have ever seen a shade like this before.  This shade is so much more interesting than all the pretty mint greens that we have been seeing this spring, it is very unexpected and so unique.  We all know that I would be attracted to a blue polish as soon as I knew that it was part of the collection.  Skylar is a medium blue with gold and silver shimmer.  Again, this is so unique and is like no other shade that I have seen before.

If the polishes themselves are as good as they sound and actually earn all the raves that I have read from them, then the products from this company look as though they could provide me with yet another nail polish brand obsession.

Vincent Longo Diamond Lip Gloss

Lately I have been revisting my stash of Vincent Longo products, I used this collection a lot in 2006 and 2007 when it was readily available at Bath and Body Works and Sephora.  My usage has really tapered off since that time since I can barely find this line in stores anymore and have to order all my products from the company's website.  I have been rediscovering my stash of Longo products since I started spring cleaning and I decided to retry every single one of them out and see if they are beginning to get old and lose their pigment or if I can hang onto to them for a season or two longer.  So far, I have had no problems with any of the products being spoiled but I have rediscovered a bunch of products that I had forgotten about.  Spring cleaning might just be the best time of the year!

One of the products that I rediscovered is the Diamond Lip Gloss, one of my first Longo purchases and one of their hardest products for me to wear.  I bought this gloss in the Diamond Rose hue, a warm medium rose with a huge amount of gold shimmer laced into the formula.  This level of shimmer is on par with the MAC Dazzleglasses and makes your lips the focal point of your face, a look that is best reserved for nighttime makeup. 
The Vincent Longo website provides a full product description and usage instructions.  "Diamond Lip Gloss is a lip-moisturizing, stardust-shimmering, full color gloss.  High-tech reflective pearls combines with pure pigment for a brilliant finish that wears significantly longer than traditional lip glosses.  Glides over lips with an ultra-silky, cushiony soft texture.  Aloe Vera and Vitamin E moisturize and condition the lip tissue.  Vanilla extract adds a beautiful fragrance."

Some thoughts on the formula - it is very hydrating and is an almost watery texture.  It is very creamy and silky, I love the feel of this gloss during application.  It is also one of the more hydrating lip glosses that I have used.  My major complaint with this product is the wear time, or lack of wear I should say.  The product description states that it wears longer than most lip glosses, however I have a completely different view on that aspect.  This gloss stayed on for less than two hours for me and came off as soon as I ate or drank anything.  I know that lip glosses don't stay on as long as lipsticks but the wear time on this one is one of the shortest that I have ever used, so I don't know from where the company is pulling the "long wear" aspect of this product from.  It is pretty while it is on but it comes off so fast that it is a very high maintence lip gloss formula.

The usage instructions, "For beautiful, lush looking lips, be sure to prep your lips with either our Lip and Gel Stain or Lip Pencil.  This will also prevent your lips from looking bare or unshaped when the shine starts to wear away.  Then dab your choice of Diamond Gloss onto lips.  Using VL Lip Brush #35 or #36, completely paint lips up to and including the lip line."  So I use this product all wrong...  I use it on clean lips straight from the tube, using the doe foot applicator.   Perhaps if I followed the instructions (which I never saw on the tube or on the box), then this lip gloss would last longer for me.  I would try using this over a nude or rose lip pencil, the shade that I have wouldn't really work with any other shades.

- Rosewood Luster - neutral medium rose with gold shimmer
- Berry Crush - warm medium berry with gold shimmer
- Diamond Rose - warm medium rose with gold shimmer
- Lavender Mews - pale lavender with silver shimmer
- Starlet Pink - light blue pink with silver shimmer
- Goldleif - pure gold foil

Diamond Rose is one of the few warm shades that I own in my lip gloss collection, it didn't look warm in the tube and the gold comes out the most during application.  This shade looks the best during the summer, it is more flattering on slightly bronzed skin than on pale winter skin.  This is why I get much less use from it than I do from many of my other lip glosses, I only pull it out from the months of June to September.  I like the Starlet Pink and the Lavender Mews shades from this gloss, they are both much cooler than the shade that I bought so maybe I would get more usage from them.  In addition, I will have to find a neutral lip pencil to use with this gloss and see if it helps to anchor it better.

Shu Uemura Spring 2012 Collection - Celestial Garden Spring Mode

Three springs ago, Shu Uemura had my favorite collection of the entire season and I received some of the eye makeup from a friend who was currently in Japan at that time.  I have not been that obsessed with one of their collections ever since but I am so excited about this spring collection since it is a series of lovely pale hues that are inspired by an ethereal garden.  I have fantasies of pale pinks, lilacs, and seafoam shades to add to my eye and lip collection.  Oh how I wish that this line was still carried in the United States...

"The world above the clouds, surrounded by overflowing positive energy, full of colours and full of light.  The same scenery, the same world can look so different, if seen with all your senses wide open.  Unchain yourself, play with the colours, enjoy make-up, and above all enjoy precious moments that exist in your life."  No comments on the super-flowery collection description, this might be one of the worst collection descriptions that I have heard all spring, it tells us nothing about the collection itself and hides behind unecessary verbage that hinders more than aids in describing the collection products.  When looking at the collection products, it seems that the look revolves around the two brand new eye shadow trios that are introduced this season.

Based on the model's makeup for this collection, nothing in the collection seems to be very pigmented or ultra-dramatic.  This is a very different look from a company that is know for their dramatic stylings and very pigmented makeup products, I am willing to bet that many of these shades can be built up to be very pigmented and create a whole different look than the model's. 

My favorite piece of the collection is the one that is currently sold out, the Creamy Dome Blusher in the Fairy Pink shade.  This is a very interesting concept and packaging and I would love to get my hands on this product (however much of a challenge that will prove to be).  My second favorite product in the collection is the Eye Shadow Trio in Light, I love that grass green shade.  I will wear that shade all through the spring and summer and the other shades in the trio will complement both it and many other shades that I already own.  I can see myself getting so much usage from this trio, I have to order this one from the website.

The last pieces that I like from the collection are from the lip shades, I love the pinks in both formulas in this collection.  From the Rouge Unlimited Supreme in PK 337, I wonder how light this shade actually is and if it is dupe of the original MAC Viva Glam Gaga.  From the glosses, I like the Blooming Pink shade, this is complement my porcelain skin when I wear it right now and then my bronzed skin later on in the summer.

This collection isn't as amazing as the one that I opened the post by telling you about but this is still a very nice collection.  The piece that I must own the most is the Eye Shadow Trio in the green shade, it is very flattering and on trend for the season.
