Benefit Fake Up Hydrating Undereye Concealer

I have been using the same Benefit concealer since the end of last year and Erase Paste has quickly become one of my favorite face products.  Based on how much I love that concealer formula, I jumped at the chance to try another Benefit concealer formula when I had my choice of Sephora VIB Point Perks.  I have been trying the Fake Up Hydrating Undereye Concealer since the beginning of this week and I can already say that all of Benefit's concealer formulas are not created equal.  I think this is one of the few products that I have not liked at all in the past few weeks and that I could never see myself buying again.

The Benefit website provides the following description of this undereye concealer formula, "This hydrating crease-control concealer - with vitamin E & apple seed extract - hides dark circles and diffuses fine lines for a silky smooth, ultra-natural look. It’s proven to keep skin hydrated for six hours."

The following testing results are also provided for this product...

- 100% said it hydrates skin
- 100% said it feels comfortable on skin
- 91% said it conceals dark circles

This is one of the most unique products that I have ever used on my eye area and I give Benefit points for this aspect of the product.  This product combines the coverage of a stick concealer and then hydrating properties of an undereye balm.  The concealer itself is in the middle of the product and it is surrounded by the hydrating balm.  Once applied to the skin, they mix together and become a two-in-one product for hydrating and concealing.  Benefit states that the product should be applied directly to the undereye area and then patted in using the ring finger.

I have used this product each morning and I have determined that I just cannot use it as described and this is just not the product for me.  I started by hydrating my undereye area with the Bobbi Brown Hydrating Eye Cream and then blend my foundation in the undereye area using a Beauty Blender.  I have dark undereye circles and have always relied on a high coverage concealer to cover them up.  Once I had all of these products in place, I applied the Benefit product to each of my undereye areas and then blended it in as suggested on the brand's website.

As with many two-in-one products that I have tried, this product falls short in both the hydrating and concealing aspects.  I cannot use this without another eye cream as it seems like the application and blending of the product drag my delicate undereye skin.  I have found that it also falls short in the concealing aspect, it is too sheer to fully cover my dark undereye circles.  I have found no way in this product lives up to its description and I will not be buying this in the full size.

I found a way to use through the large sample size that I have of this product, I apply it after my foundation and use it as a primer to apply a full coverage concealer over.  It works nicely in this aspect however this just adds an extra step to my routine that I don't reap much benefit from.  I will use it in this fashion to finish the product up but I would not buy another tube to use only in this fashion.

This might be a nice undereye concealer for someone who doesn't struggle very much with dark undereye circles and only needs a small amount of coverage in this area.  I just cannot really make this product work as I have to use it with both another eye cream and another undereye concealer, it only creates an extra step in my morning routine that isn't needed.

NARS Concealer

Yesterday I talked about how the recent heat wave is affecting my skincare regime and today we are going to look at what I have had to change in my makeup regime to work around it.  I have been using Urban Decay Beauty Balm and then a MAC Bronzer all summer and then using Benefit Erase Paste on any problem areas.  The first two products are holding up to the heat and humidity but the concealer is slightly too soft and is melting off my face in the heat.  I decided that I wanted a thicker formula of a concealer when I went into Sephora to pick up my Philosophy face cream.  I am hoping that a thick formula dotted directly on dark spots and blemishes will be more effective than bringing my pot of Erase Paste in my bag with me.

One of the thickest formulas that I could find at Sephora is the NARS formula, this one is available in a stick form.  I use the product by directly dotting it on spots and blemishes and then using a flat concealer brush on the areas under my eyes and any areas of red on my cheeks.  I might even be able to continue using Erase Paste under my eyes and keep the NARS formula for blemishes.  I will play around with the combinations of the products on my face and see how it works.

I first used a NARS concealer formula when I was in college and I remember that the product was very highly pigmented and hard to apply (I wasn't quite the beauty expert in college so this was more my application issues than the product itself).  I gave the product another shot because I needed something that wasn't going to budge for any reason and that was one of the best aspects about this product.

The NARS website states, "Brilliantly obscures imperfections and dark spots with a creamy, vitamin-rich formula that nourishes the skin for all-day wear. Crease-proof and easily blendable for a flawless finish."  This formula is enriched with Vitamin E to hydrate skin and to improve application on the skin.  NARS Concealer is available in 10 shades, I bought the second shade (Vanilla) because it has an extra touch of pink that will work better with my skin than the palest shade.  For some reason, I haven't need to change concealer shades when I self tan and I am almost at the end of that season anyway so I didn't feel the need to purchase a medium toned shade.

This concealer works best with a stiff brush, I use one type for the under eye area and then a smaller brush to dot the product right on blemishes.  I start with primer and Urban Decay Beauty Balm every day then I dot this product on whatever blemishes were not concealed by this combination and then dust bronzer over my whole face.  This regime keeps my concealer in place for a good ten hours and then it usually begins to fade away when I go to the gym at night or do an outside workout.  The formula is a bit creamier than I remembered it to be and the tube is completely different so it is very possible that NARS changed the formula around a bit.

I don't know that I will need this formula all year long, I might use it mostly on blemishes and then keep using Erase Paste on dark areas and work with the combination of the two products.  I go through concealer very slowly and likely won't need to replace either of these two products for at least another six to eight months.  I doubt that I would have purchased this product had this weather not gone crazy to end the summer but I know that I will keep using this concealer for the next few months.  I would recommend this formula mostly for someone who needs spot coverage for blemishes or very dark circles in the under eye area.  Small amounts of this product will get you a long way and I really like the results that I get from this product!

Benefit Erase Paste

It is officially winter and between holiday stress and the end of the semester stress, my skin is looking worse than ever.  In addition to how pale and dull I fear that it looks, my dark undereye circles seem to be more defined and darker than ever before.  The MAC concealer that I have been using for the past few months now doesn't seem to be doing anything and I need a product with a thicker texture and much more pigmentation for this area.  I was considering ordering another tube of Amazing Concealer, a product that has done a great job for me in the past but I wanted to read the reviews of all kinds of concealers on the Sephora website and see if there is a gem that I haven't tried yet.  At this point in time, I am over the holidays and just want the fuss to be over with so that I can battle winter head on and go right into a very hard next semester.

Ignoring all the holiday gifts and glitz, I went right to the Makeup area of the website.  There is no point in me going to the store this time of the season, I will not get anywhere near the counters with all the holiday shoppers trying to get the last few people crossed of their lists.  Based on the fact that I had to order online and cannot try shades or formulas, I wanted to stick with a vrand that I have used many items from before and have trusted for a few years now, when Sephora is empty at the end of March, I can try something totally off the wall and from a brand that I have never tried anything from.  Also, I wanted to find a product that I could trust and that I knew would work the first time that I used it and I wouldn't then have to find another product to order.

Based on the brand's reputation and the reviews that I found on the Sephora website, I decided to order the lightest shade of Benefit's best selling concealer, Erase Paste.  "A brightening camouflage for the eyes and face.  Benefit Erase Paste is a concentrated, creamy, blendable concealer that instantly brightens and camouflages all-in-one. It has an innovative formula which makes sure signs of stress and fatigue are a thing of the past. These three brightening neutral shades give every gal correction perfection.  Erase Paste includes a step-by-step concealing and brightening lesson and a handy little spatula."

This concealer comes in three shades; one for fair skin, one for medium skin, and then one for darker skin tones.  Of course, I ordered the fairest shade in this product, my skin is at its palest in the winter and I won't get any color until I begin self tanning next summer.  The lightest shade is the best for my skintone, it is pretty light and I would think that most ladies will use the middle shade in the range.

Benefit suggests the following usage for this product, "Scoop a tiny amount out of jar with spatula. Dot with ring finger onto any shadowed areas under eyes or on face.   Blend evenly and smoothly."  The first time that I used this product, I dipped my concealer brush right into the jar and barely any product stuck to it, I then tried to put the brush in on its side and still got next to no product sticking to the brush.  The next time that I used the product, I decided to actually follow the directions provided by the company and this time around it worked much better.  I used the spatula one time to get the product out, however I also found out that I can dip my fingertip right into the product and then dot the product onto my undereye area.  Either way works, but I don't recommend trying to dip the brush right into the product itself.  The concealer is thicker than many other formulas, so once I get out it, I have to warm it up in between my fingertips in order to best apply it.  Once I have it dotted in place, then I can blend it with a flat concealer brush and set it with loose powder.

I use the product mostly for dark circles, I have not yet had any blemishes that have needed to be covered.  I bet that it will work very well for blemishes since it it so thick a formula.  I would not recommend this formula for those with very oily skin, since it has the potential to only make it worse.  This formula is best for normal to dry skin that is in need of good spot coverage.  The light reflecting particles may this product recommended more for use on dark circles, they help to conceal them and improve the overall appearance of the area.

Awake Invention Stretch Concealer

Awake is one of the highest quality color lines but unfortunatly it has been much reduced over the past few years, the company used to have a full color line that contained fantastic shades for every facial feature.  One of the best products that they carried was a loose powder with a bit of shimmer in that I found wonderfully flattering and I wanted to order again.  However I am on the company's website and instead of finding my powder, the only products that I am finding are skincare and then a few face foundations and concealers.  To my extreme displeasure, all of the great Awake products are gone and only a few of the half decent products are left.  I have used the concealer from this company in the past but have never written about it.  While mourning the lack of color products, I do want to write up the concealer and see if the formula has changed over the years.

This company currently only offers one formula of concealer, much less than was originally offered.  The product is the Invention Stretch Concealer, a lightweight liquid formula.  To begin with, liquid concealers are not my cup of tea, I never find them pigmented enough to cover my flaws.  I prefer cream or stick formulas so that they fully cover my dark circles and any last areas of redness.  Overall, i have found that liquid concealers are too thin to cover any major flaws and wear off too quickly during the day.  So it won't come as a shock to anyone that this product didn't work well for me and that I didn't like it.

"A full coverage liquid concealer that minimizes the appearance of dark circles, fine lines, and all skin imperfections with a soft matte finish.  The stretch matrix base accomodates the facial movements to stay crease-proof throughout the day.  Rosehip Oil softens skin and provides hydration."  The company recommends use as follows: After applying to problem areas with the brush, lightly tap with fingertip to blend.

This formula is housed in a thin tube with a small brush applicator.  Most liquid concealers come with a sponge tip applicator to dot the product onto specific spots.  I disliked the small brush applicator, it allowed me to get the product to very specific areas however it didn't blend the product well at all.  To make this product look somewhat better upon application, I had to then use a flat concealer brush to blend it in.  And then I had to finish blending the edges with my finger.  This formula actually took longer to apply then most cream formulas.  Considering how intense the application was, I was really disappointed that the product didn't covera very well.  It took my less time to get better coverage with the Amazing Concealer.  I had to apply a minimun of three coats to make any difference underneath my eyes.  At this point, I began to run the risk of the product clumping and looking worse than the dark circles themselves.  I honestly would rather left all my imperfections show then look like I applied too much makeup and can't get the application right.

After all it took to get the application correct, it added insult to injury when the product began to wear off within two hours.  By lunchtime, my morning makeup application was almost gone and I needed to restart all over again.  I just can't use liquid concealers, I just will never see good results with them and I wish that this wasn't one of the few products that the Awake company decided to keep around...

MAC Select Cover-Up Concealer

After finishing up a stint with Amazing Concealer and Laura Mercier Secret Camoflage, I decided that I had two great options for concealers and I wasn't interested in trying any other brands.  However when browsing at the MAC counter and my favorite makeup artist comes up and offers to do my makeup, I can never resist picking out a few things that she tries on me...in addition to the pile that I already came to the counter for.  Ever since I liked the Mineralize Skinfinish SPF 15 Foundation, she has been trying all kinds of face products out on me since she feels that MAC has one of the best ranges of foundations and concealers.  Since I agreed with her for that foundation formula, she wanted to show me one of her favorite concealers the last time that I went to the counter.  I can never turn her down so I let her try it out on me.

The concealer formula that she prefers for my skintone and type is the Select Cover-Up, a liquid formula that comes in a tube that reminds me very much of the Amazing Concealer.  Perhaps that is why I was open to it, I doubt that I would have been interested in any type of stick concealer.  I wanted a product that is full coverage and is easy to blend.  I have tried several formulas that are full coverage and work well when applied right to the area but are hard to blend (therefore increasing the redness in my skin when I try to blend them).  She assured me that this formula was very easy to blend and wouldn't make my skin redder when I tried to work with it.

"Liquid camoflage for the skin.  Texture-free, virtually invisible.  Comes in a blend.  Blends in.  Brightens and lightens dark areas, erases spots, evens-out skin tones.  Makes skin flaw-free.  Use pre-foundation or on its own.  Don't reveal it, conceal it!", states the product description from the MAC website.  This concealer is available in 15 shades to suit a range of skintones, my shade is the NC20 (the lightest shade of course).

This is a very soft liquid concealer, it reminds me very much of the texture of the Amazing Concealer.  Based on the thin liquid texture, I initially squeezed way too much of this product out, dipped my brush into it and applied it to my face.  It took me about 10 seconds to realize that I applied way too much of it to my undereye area and wiped off the excess.  Very little of this product is needed for full coverage especially in the undereye area.  This is another one of those concealers that are best used when you squeeze a dab on the back of your hand and then dip the very tip of your brush in it.  I then placed the tip of brush on the area to be concealed and repeated the motions until I had a line of small dots on my undereye area.  To conceals imperfections and blemishes, the same type of motions need to be used, however the brush tip needs to be placed right on top of blemish.  After getting the correct amount in the correct area of my face, I then use my ring finger to softly pat the product into my skin until the blemish or affected area is well covered.  This product needs to be used with a concealer brush in order to ensure exact placement of the product, I would not try to use this product with only a finger application.  This concealer provides medium to full coverage when used with the above application method.

This product performed the best in the undereye area since it is both easy to use and contains brightening agents in order to improve the appearance of this area.  The softness of the texture allows it to be patted in very easily and without tugging on this area.  The brightening agents really make a difference in this area and allow me to use less of the product to achieve the same result with the Amazing Concealer.  This is one of the easiest blending concealers that I have used in quite a long time so this is one that I really recommend if dark undereye circles are one of your skin issues.  This formula conceals blemishes well but I feel that a thicker, waxier formula is a better choice for blemishes.  I don't have a major need for concealing blemishes, I only have about one or two a month so this doesn't bother me but I wouldn't recommend this for someone who has more moderate acne.

This concealer is a great formula for normal to dry skin types and it works well for concealing my redness issues.  I recommend this concealer for someone whose major skin issues involve undereye circles and don't have issues with acne.  This product needs to be used with a brush so if you aren't willing to work with the brush every morning, then this isn't the type of formulation that you would like.  This type of formula takes a bit longer to work with in the morning then your traditional stick formula however I find the payoff to be much nicer and it is well worth those extra few minutes.

Amazing Cosmetics Amazing Concealer

Amazing Cosmetics is not one of the best known makeup lines out there but I think it one that produces some of the highest quality products that I have ever tried.  The concealer from this line is one of the first high-end makeup products that I have ever used (right after I graduated college was when I really began to get into color) and I am convinced that it helped me to come all the way over to the high-end lines.  How did one single product accomplish this?  Two ways!  The first way is that one tube lasts forever, when I used drugstore concealer in college, I went through tubes of it like crazy.  This product?  One small tube of this product lasted me almost a year and a half (without any change in pigmentation or texture).  The other reason is that it worked wonders for my complexion and really let me see how very quality products work in comparision to lower quality ones.

For those of you who don't know all the background on the Amazing Cosmetics line, I will provide a brief introduction to brand (from the Sephora website).  "It all started with a concealer - a multi-purpose, highly pigmented, waterproof concealer that magically erased everything from dark circles to sun damage and looked undetectable on the skin.  Makeup pros in the film and television industry discovered this little wonder and now half of Hollywood, along with scores of women, is hooked.  Amazing Cosmetics has single handedly changed the face of makeup with high-performance products that offer flawless results.  From their cult-favorite concealer to the their skin-smoothing mineral foundation and wearable palette of color, an amazing complexion has never been more achievable."  This concealer is known as the "magic eraser" and it is exactly what it does.

"A full-coverage concealer ideal for any kind of imperfection.  Amazing Cosmetics' Amazing Concealer is the most amazing concealer available today.  This highly pigmented, super-emollient, waterproof formula blends seamlessly into the skin, creating a flawless complexion that looks and feels natural.  The Amazing Concealer is formulated to erase all skin imperfections: dark circles, broken capillaries, sun damage, redness, and more.  There's nothing on the market today that can compare to Amazing Concealer and its ability to erase all skin imperfections.  Unlike the traditional concealers, the Amazing Concealer is so concentrated, you only need to use tiny pin-dot amounts of product to create the skin you've always wanted but thought that you could never have.  A beauty insider's favorite, the Amazing Concealer is your 'magic eraser'."

This concealer is available in a very wide range of shades for a concealer, a product that we usually see offered in about three to five shades.  I purchased the Fair (Ultra Light) shade and it was a perfect match for my NC15 skin.  This concealer is a fantastic product however it is not as low maintence as using a concealer from a stick.  This product is housed in a small tube, it reminds of a tube of paint.  This must be applied with a concealer brush, it is so concentrated that if you use your fingers, then you will overapply and end up with a caked appearance on the skin.  I squeezed a dot-sized amount out on the back of my hand and then used a flat synthetic concealer brush to apply it to the skin.  I dotted it on undereye circles and then blended it with my ring finger to spread it out.  Spot concealing is even easier than that.  I take the tip of the brush and dab the product right on the blemish or dark area and then lightly pat it into my skin.  This product is very emollinet so I do recommend setting this product with loose powder to ensure that it stays on all day.

After the intial application, this product will last all day with minimal touching up.  The only areas that required any type of touching up were blemishes and the touch-ups were few and far between.  The formula is more emollient that many other formulas so I do not recommend it for oily skin or extensive acne cover-ups.  With the long-wearing factor of this product, a separate makeup remover or toner is needed to ensure that this product fully comes off.  I would also think that you would be fine removing this product with a oil cleanser, but if you are using a light foam or natural cream cleanser, you will need a separate product for full removal.

This is hands down the best concealer that I have tried so far.  I recommend this to many people who are looking for a great concealer, especially for undereye coverage.  For acne coverage, I do prefer Laura Mercier's Secret Camoflage as it is less emollient and a thicker texture.  This is not a product for you if you prefer a fast stick coverage, you need to spend a bit more time with this product in this morning.  However, once you take the time, you will have coverage that lasts all day and into the night.  It is worth it to me to spend the extra few minutes in the morning and not have to worry about touch-ups throughout the day.

One thing that both delighted and surprised me, I never knew that this was a whole line of makeup products.  I have always associated this line with just the concealer and I was aware that a limited line of face product existed but I never knew that they went all the way out into color choices.  I will have to investigate these products and see if they live up to the reputation of the "magic eraser" concealer.

Laura Mercier Secret Camoflage

My skin tone insists on me always having a fantastic concealer in my makeup arsenal. All the redness that is in my cheeks demands a high quality, well performing product. I am forever researching concealers from many different brands and will ask the sales associates about the products that they sell when I am buying any type of cosmetic or skincare products at their counter. Laura Mercier's foundations and concealers were recommended to me by a former coworker and this was the choice of the sales associate when I went to the counter at bloomingdales. This product is one of their best sellers and has been a winner in the Allure Best of Beauty.

After a demonstration with the different concealers from this company, I purchased this one and the matching brush. Laura Mercier states that "Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage completely camouflages dark circles, minor imperfections, and discolorations. A unique two-shade system, one to match the skin's depth of color & one to match the skin's undertone. Custom-blend your own perfect shade. High level of pigment requires very little product to achieve complete coverage. Always apply after foundation. Use an an under-eye concealer only if you have darker than average shadows by mixing with Eyedration Firming Eye Cream for a creamier, more emollient consistency". The shade of this product that is best for me is SC-1, which is the palest of the shades. This concealer is made in six shades and the shade to match the undertone can really change the pigmentation of the skin color shade.
I use both the brush that was sold to me with this product and the concealer brush from Bare Escentuals to use this product. I use the brush from Bare Escentuals to do my undereye area and to cover the redness on my cheek area. I always use this product after foundation so that my skin is better hydrated, allowing the concealer to go on easier and not cake. Also with using any concealer after foundation allows you to use less of it because foundation covers much more than many people actually think it does. The first thing that I do when using this product is to dip the flatter Bare Escentuals brush and dip it into undertone matching shade then mix it in with the skintone matching shade. After using this product many times, I have created the perfect mix of the two parts of the product. I dab the product on with the brush then blend it in to fully cover the dark or red areas. For acne, I use the Secret Camouflage brush to dip it right into the skintone matching shade and dot it right on the blemish. I them tap it until it blends in fully.

I have been using this product for about a year and I am maybe 2/3 done with it. So it has lasted a long time and I have gotten lots of use out of it. I have recommended to several people who have been looking for products that deliver great coverage. I recommend this product to anyone who needs a higher level concealer, it would perform for someone which mild skin issues but it would be overkill since that isn't what this product was made for. I do recommend buying the matching Secret Camouflage brush and a flatter concealer brush to use this product properly.

Benefit Confessions of a Concealaholic

I used to be a conceal-a-holic. I couldn't leave my house without full foundation and tons of concealer covering up all the "flaws" that I insisted were all over my face. I went through concealer like water. And this was in college so it wasn't all that long ago. Now I am more enlightened and have realized that the tons of concealer that I used to pile on just made everything worse and appear worse too. But even though I am using much less now, I am still interested in finding and trying the best concealers on the market today. Benefit's new set, Confessions of a Concealaholic puts all their best concealing and brightening products all in one set.

Sephora states that "Embrace your inner conceal-a-holic! Why fight it when you can hide it, conceal it, camouflage it, and cover it? This concealing and brightening kit has EVERYTHING you need to live happily ever after!" This kit contains both primers and concealers so a step by step application can be done and a flawless face can be achieved no matter what the original problem is.

Here is what the kit contains. It contains "That Gal" which is a brightening primer. It contains two shades of the "Boi-ing" industrial strength concealer. The offered shades are a light shade and a shade that can be used for medium complexions. My best results have come from mixing concealers so I am very happy that Benefit puts two shades in so the user can create their own best match. This kit also contains "Erase Paste" which is a brightening camouflage for eyes and face. This kit offers it in the shade that medium complexions would use. Another brightening product that is offered in this set is the "Lemon Aid" which is a sheer yellow color correcting primer. I have wanted to try this product out for my undereye circles but haven't gotten around to it yet. On the other side of the shade spectrum of brighteners, Benefit includes "Eye Bright", a pale pink brightener.

In addition to the above products, this collection includes concealer brushes and step by step instructions for all of these products. I love that Benefit includes instructions in how to best use the products. Benefit almost always includes some type of instructions in their sets and I hope that other companies will jump on this bandwagon. This is great kit for someone that needs to try different concealing products and learn how to use them correctly. I don't have any of these products though I have heard great reviews on most of the individual products in this kit. This will a welcome addition to my collection of products.
