Dylan's Candy Bar

Anyone who knows me well knows about my obsession with foody smelling perfumes and body products. If it smells like cotton candy, marshmallow fluff, cupcakes, or any other assorted treats, I will buy it without a second thought. When Bath and Body Works had their fantastic Tutti Dolci line in stock, I could satisfy this whim anytime that I went to the mall. However, this line was tragically discontinued and now I am at the mercy of etailers to find my sweet scents. I have nothing against any etailer (in fact, I have gotten fantastic products from them!) but I really like to be able to apply the scent to my skin before I buy it. Several months ago, on Makeup Alley, I read that Dylan’s Candy Bar was releasing a line of bath and body products for Sephora. Immediately, I started a countdown to the day that it would be available (online only unfortunately).

Dylan’s Candy Bar was founded by Dylan Lauren (daughter of designer Ralph Lauren) and quickly became a huge hit in New York. The first time that I read about the candy store was in a Lucky several years ago when Bobbi Brown decided to debut her new collection by throwing a party at Dylan’s Candy Bar. Makeup, cotton candy, and bright pink bubble gum martinis?! I thought I had died and gone to heaven when I first read about this place.

Dylan Lauren is a self confessed beauty junkie and wanted to combine her love of sweets and high quality beauty products (I LOVE THIS GIRL!!!). She hooked up with a group of chemists so that she could learn to create high quality, great smelling products that were still good for the skin. Her products do not contain parabens, propylene glycol, SLSs, and are not tested on animals.
The November Issue of Allure did a write up on this new line. They interviewed Lauren about her scents and how they were created. She picked the scents based on some of her best selling products in the candy store and by what scents she thought would translate well into body products. Her biggest challenge was getting the products to smell exactly like their food counterpart. To overcome this hurdle, she brought the chemists the real sweets and when through many rounds and samples to pick the high quality scents.

There are four scents in this collection. They are as follows: Birthday Cake Batter, Chocolate Cupcake, Strawberry Licorice, and Coconut Bon Bon. The scents are all available in a body wash, body lotion, sugar scrub, and a heavier body butter.

The only thing that is making me unhappy about this line is that so far, it is not in the stores yet. A Sales Associate at my local Sephora told me that it would be in stores before the holiday season. Ummmm…which begins, like right now. Hopefully this means that it will be out within the next few weeks. My hardest choice with this line will be deciding what scent to get first but at the moment, Chocolate Cupcake is coming out as the clear winner.

Clinique Superfit Foundation

For the past month or so, I have been anxiously awaiting the Clinique gift with purchase at my local Macy*s. From the moment that I heard that it was going to be occurring, I had decided that I was going to go and get the Clinique Superfit Foundation. I have used their bases before and am always happy with the texture, the wear of the products, and the massive range of shades for all skin tones.

This is the newest foundation formula from this company and is supposed to be the best wearing one released so far. The Superfit formula makes some hefty claims about how amazing this product is. Clinique promises that their “patented formula uses new technologies to wick away sweat and excess oil, keeping even T-zones fresh, fit, and free of midday shine or 5 pm fade-out”. This formula is oil free and should wear about 8 hours. The sign at one of the Clinique counters that I once visited promises this performance or the company will refund the cost of the purchase price. How could I go wrong?

Well, I did. Yesterday, I finally got a chance to visit the Clinique counter to pick a bottle of this amazing potion up. The sales associates at that counter were super excited about the product and tried their hardest to find a shade for me. We started with Neutral, determined that it was too orange and too dark. Then we went up to Petal, a paler shade. Same problem. As a last ditch effort, they tried the palest shade on me, one entitled Shell. This one was also too orange for my skin tone. I was in shock, Clinique has the widest range of foundation colors of almost every makeup line! How could they all be too orange?!

Lucky for me, the sales associate that was helping me to pick the colors out really knew her stuff. She recommended to me another foundation, the Superbalanced formula. This product “provides moisture and absorbs oil when and where needed with adjustable coverage that is silky upon application. Oil-free formula provides natural skin finish.” She actually thought that this formula might be better than the Superfit for my sensitive, combination skin. We found a perfect match and I happily bought that bottle and an Almost Lipstick in Black Honey.

So I didn’t get exactly what I wanted but I still left the counter happy. Hey Clinique! Please make more shades in your Superfit formula, I still want to try it!!

November 2008 Issue of Lucky

Last month, I talked about how the October Issue of Lucky had Jessica Simpson on the cover and the mixed reaction I had to this choice. When I got the November issue out of my mailbox, I had one and only one reaction to the cover with Vanessa Hudgens on it. ACK!!! What is this, Seventeen magazine? Are we trying to get 15 year olds to start reading Lucky and so we put their favorite teenyboppers on the cover. High School Musical was such a deep film and she is just a great actress. ::GAGS:: I thought that I was going to die when I saw this cover.

Getting past the cover, there are a few things that I do want to get from this issue…

- Smashbox Halo Hydrating Perfecting Powder - “Packed with antioxidant goji berries, anti-inflammatory gold, amino acids, and peptides”

- Givenchy Prisme Libre Loose Powder Quartet- “When you blend the four translucent shades together, they beautifully cancel out tinges of red and yellow”

- Natura Bisse The Cure - “I put this rich day cream on in the morning, and I go from dry crazy mess to smooth and soft right away. Where most creams tend to wander after about an hour, this stays put all day”

Jean Godfrey June’s column didn’t even really wow me this month. The only that she sold me on is the new Jeanne Lanvin fragrance. This scent is a mix of pomegranate and flowers and she described it as a “pretty, feminine, wear-it-every-day scent”. I really want to go out and find this perfume even though it sounds more like a scent to wear in this springtime.

Wow, I only want four products from this entire issue?! I guess a horrifying cover can ruin the whole issue…

NARS Flame for Sephora

This month Sephora celebrated it 10th anniversary. Its hard to believe that Sephora has been around for 10 entire years but I have no idea how I would go beauty product shopping without it. It is truly is my beauty playground and source all of things beauty related. That being said, to celebrate this event, certain companies have released special products for the anniversary. The first one that I saw was a special version of Mineral Veil (gag). But there is one product that is treasure to me…

One of my favorite collections, NARS, released a special lipstick shade just for this event. Obviously, it is limited edition and only available at Sephora. This lipstick was made to continue the trend of deep toned lipstick for fall. The Sephora site has this description up, “NARS Sephora Flame lipstick is a rich, deep red-brown, semi-matte formula with a long-wearing, velvety finish.” I saw this color at the store and this may just in deed by the most perfect red lipstick ever.

While I was at the store, I was able to try it on and see it both on myself and several other ladies. All of us had different skin tones, but it somehow long amazing on everyone. From my super pale skin to a more tanned complexion, this shade is uber-flattering and a must for anyone who wants to try red lipstick.

As of right now, this shade is limited edition, so run out and get it while Sephora has it in stock. I would love if this would become part of the permanent NARS collection so that I will be able to replace my tube when I run out. It’s kind of bittersweet…this shade is amazing and I may never be able to find it again.

New Mascaras for Fall

Mascara fiend that I am, I made a list of all the new mascaras that I want to try in the upcoming months. Some of these are based on reviews from people, others are new products that have suckered me in.

They are…
- Guerlain Le 2 de Guerlain Two Brush Mascara
- Smashbox Bionic Mascara
- Givenchy Phenomen’eyes Mascara
- Excceptionnel de Chanel
- Too Faced Lash Injection Pin Point
- Benefit BadGal Lash in Blue
- Dior Diorshow Iconic
- Lancome Oscillation

What I will do is over the next few months, I will be buying and testing all of the above mascaras and deciding which are the best ones. The new Lancome one hasn’t come out yet and already has a very long waiting list, so this review might take a while…

MAC for Ungaro

In fear of this blog turning into a MAC only website, I have to discuss yet another new line from MAC. They have been churning them out faster than I can ever remember and there are good and bad aspects of their multitude of new collections. They give me many new products to lust after and the chances of finding the perfect shade are much higher. But, if I ever find that perfect shade, all of these collections are LE, so I will never be able to get it again. And, honestly, the tons of new colors tend to make it much less exciting when new collections are released.
This collection was created for designer Emanuel Ungaro. The MAC site gives the following description; “Dreamy, softly impressionistic, reverential…To celebrate his exciting debut It-Designer, Esteban Cortazar, celebrity make up artist, Sharon Dowsett, and MAC come together backstage to create to colour collection in the spirit of today’s Ungaro.

The colours of the Fall 2008 look on the Ungaro runway…

Emanuel Ungaro: Lipstick
- Pure Rose - Pastel Pink with White Pearl
- Freckletone - Neutral yellow-tone beige

Emanuel Ungaro: Lipglass
- Pastel Emotion - Pastel pink with white pearl

Emanuel Ungaro: Eye Shadow
- Phloof! - Frosted off-white
- Mineral - Deep cool brown
- Lilac Touch - Dirty mid-tone violet
- Soft Flower - Clean mid-tone coral

Emanuel Ungaro: Cream Color Base (product only found in Ungaro collection)
- Crushed Bougainvillea - Jewel tone berry stain
- Fresh Morning - Soft muted pastel pink

Emanuel Ungaro: Beauty Powder
- Flower Mist Dew - Clean brightening pink

Technakohl Liner
- Auto-de-blu - Intense jewel tone blue

Browset
- Mink - Dirty brown

Zoomlash
- Lofty Brown - Ultra-rich blackened cocoa brown

I am in love with the two shades of the Cream Color Base in this collection. Cream Color Base is a intensely colored cream that can be used on both cheeks and lips. Both colors are beautiful but I must say that I am really attracted to Crushed Bougainvillea, which would be amazing as a blush more than as a lip color. I haven’t seen this collection in my local Macy*s, so I may have to take a trip to the MAC store if I am ever to get my hands on this collection.

One Trend that I Won't Be Trying

While I am very excited about many of the trends this fall, there is one trend that I fell head over heels in love with. I started out the season really excited for the dramatic eye looks but in the end I fell madly in love with the trend of dark red lips. I love Urban Decay’s Gash, Vincent Longo’s Rush, and NARS Flame. Of course, there will always have to be some trend that makes me want to gag and ask myself “WHY WHY WHY?!” This year that trend started with YSL. Normally, I love YSL but this trend just horrifies me. It is actually a twist of the dramatic lips…shiny black patent leather lip gloss.

The product that started this insanity is YSL Gloss Pur Black, available only through the YSL website and Saks. It is currently sold out and the waiting list grows longer everyday. This color was first seen in Vogue and that was the beginning of the trend. “Mysterious, sensual, luminous…”. That is the description provided by the company. My description is as follows “gothic, freaky, out of style by the time that the waiting list is fulfilled”. I only hate the color of this gloss, not the formula itself. This is new product that will be coming out in a range of shades (thank god!) in the Spring 2009 collection. It is a very shiny and sparkle free lip gloss. I would love it in pale pink shades.

Love it? Hate it? What are your views?

MAC Cremesheen

MAC has released several new collection over the past few weeks. The second of these is called Cremesheen and it is collection comprised solely of lip products. The MAC site gives the description as follows, “Watch out…This new lip colour speaks softly but says something shocking! Discover the finish that makes Cremesheen such hot gossip. With its smooth, creamy texture and 14 eloquent colours to choose from, the difference will speak for itself”.

The lipstick colors are as follows…

- Crème d’Nude - Pale muted peach beige
- Dare You - Deep brown red
- Brave Red - Bright yellow red
- Hang-up - Deep berry
- Crosswires - Clean pinky orange
- Fanfare - Mid-tone yellow pink
- Speed Dial - Light blue pink
- Modesty - Muted neutral pink
- On Hold - Mid-tone yellow raspberry
- Party Line - Red-toned plum
- Hot Gossip - Mid-tone pinky plum’
- Ravishing - Clean light peachy coral
- Speak Louder - Clean poppy blue pink
- Stay in Touch - Light yellow brown

The nail polish color in this collection is called Seasonal Peach and is creamy pale peachy pink.

I saw this collection at the MAC counter in my local Macy*s and I have to say that it really took a back seat to the Cult of Cherry Collection. These colors are nice enough but they really don’t embody the “look” of MAC very well. Cult of Cherry is much more exciting and will get much more attention from MAC customers. For myself, any color that has “yellow” in the description will not work for my skin tone. I would definitely need a color that has pink in the description. So, I am looking at trying Modesty or Speed Dial. I am thinking that these are going to be colors that will be more in the My-Lips-But-Better category.

MAC Suite Array

The first new collection that MAC has released is fully for eyes. It is called Suite Array and the eye shadows are sold in “suites”. The description of this collection from MAC is as follows; “Check in to the double delight luxury of our new Eye Shadow Suite. Eight shadow duos in unexpectedly fresh and frivolous colours paired with one of our new Pearlglide Eye Liners will provide you with all the accoutrements of day and night bedroom eyes…” My first thought when viewing the collection is that each duo has one intense color and the other is more muted (for blending, I guess).

Here are the colors…

Eye Shadow Suites
- Rose Suites - Intense blue pink/Light yellow pink with silver pearl
- Team Violets - Dark burgundy with burgundy pearl/Mid-tone violet with gold
pearl
- Sweet Liaison - Deep brown with gold pearl/Pale yellow with gold pearl
- Shallow v. Deep - Bluish green with gold pearl/Mint with silver pearl
- Counterparts - Deep forest green with gold pearl/Mid-tone orange with gold
pearl
- Smoke & Ash - Black with silver pearl/Mid-tone grey with silver pearl
- Ocean 2 - Deep grey/Green with silver pearl/Light ice blue with silver pearl
- Blue Zone - Mid-tone blue with silver pearl/Light blue with silver pearl

Pearl Glide Eyeliner
- Bankroll - Rich green with bright green sparkle
- Molasses - Dirty brown with mid-tone brown glitter
- Spare Change - Mid-tone brown with copper glitter
- Miss Fortune - Eggplant with light pink glitter
- Black Russian - Black with navy blue glitter
- Fly-by-Blu - Light blue with blue glitter
- Rave - Deep purple with purple glitter
- Wolf - Deep grey with gold glitter

The Pearl Glide Eyeliners are a limited edition product from MAC that so far has gotten tons of rave reviews from the ladies on Makeup Alley. The MAC site gives the following as the official product description; “A creamy kohl-like eyeliner with a sparkly, reflective finish. Highly pigmented, stands out for its rich, luxurious colours and pearl-metal look. Provides eye-catching , highly stylized contrast for any look. Smooth. Glides on. Feels comfortable. Long wearing.” These colors are absolutely amazing and I regret that I didn’t swab them the last time that I visited MAC. I love my Urban Decay eyeliner and I have always refused to believe that any other product could even come close to their colors and textures. I believe that my UD liner may have finally met its match, I will have to go back to MAC and get Molasses, Spare Change, and Rave before they are all sold out.

Philosophy The Coffee House

I will freely admit that I am a complete caffeine addict. Every morning, I must imbibe some kind of coffee and I can’t stick to the doctor recommended 8 oz. or less. To tell the truth, we are talking 20 oz or more everyday, if not twice a day. I have even gotten Starbucks to make me a iced coffee with 8 shots of espresso in it. Suffice is to say, Starbucks is my god and I can never stop going there or drinking coffee.

Coffee-freak that I am, I am automatically attracted to anything that smells like coffee or contains caffeine as an active ingredient. So imagine my happiness when upon entering my local Sephora, I saw the new Philosophy scents. They brought back their traditional fall scents (pumpkin pie = gag me), but with them, I noticed this little gem of a set.

The little gem that I am referring to is a set of 3 mini 3 in 1, called “The Coffee House” and it contains three coffee based scents that would appeal to coffee addict like myself. The scents are as follows: Eggnog Latte, Café au Lait, and Caramel Mocha Latte. The Caramel Mocha Latte gets me the most excited, I love Caramel Lattes from Starbucks and I drink them either iced or hot all year round.

Could these products wean me from my coffee addiction? Doubtful. I think that they will add to even more by making me crave lattes in my morning shower. But is this bad thing? I think not.

October 2008 Issue of Allure

A couple of weeks ago, the coveted Allure Best of Beauty issue landed in my mailbox. This is the issue that I wait all year for and generally consider this to the Bible of beauty products. This year didn’t disappoint. The list created some new products for me to lust after, nominations that I agree with wholeheartly, and nominations that I utterly disagreed with.

- Straightener, Hair - They picked Nexxus Sleek Memory Straightening Spray, I feel that the best pick in this category is Phyto Phytodefrisant Baum.
- Mask, Hair - They picked Pantene Pro V Restorative Replenishing Mask, I feel that the best pick in this category is Phyto PhytoCitrus Hair Mask.

I am not saying that any of the above products that I disagreed with are bad products, I am just saying that I have found a product in those category that I find to be superior to those nominated or to any others that I have personally tested. Feel free to agree or disagree.

October 2008 Issue of Lucky

The October 2008 issue of Lucky sat in my pile of magazines for awhile until I finally had the time to really go through out (so did several other magazines, including the revered Best of Beauty issue of Allure - oh the fun of being in school and working full time) but when I finally had the time to read it, I was glad that I decided to take my time through it.

Jessica Simpson is on the cover, which didn’t really surprise me since her new fragrance had just been released several weeks earlier. She is a celeb that I have a love-hate relationship with. I love her look, her boyfriend (Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo) and some of her music all while hating her persona (at least on Newlyweds), hating the majority of her previous two beauty product lines, and hating that I can never have the same hair color that she pulls off. And believe me, I have tried. My hairstylist is sick of me pulling out a picture of Jessica every time we go to discuss updating my hair color. So this cover kinda made me both squeal and groan at the same time. Though I must admit, this cover produced more of a reaction from me than any other in the past few months. Perhaps this is what Lucky was going for in their choice of a cover model. Now for the contents of the magazine itself…

The first page of the beauty section talks about black eyeliner and the choices that are available to women this fall. Whether women decide to use pencil or go all out and choose liquid liner, it is obvious that black liner is a staple for the next few months and everyone needs to have at least one product in their arsenal to create this look.

Things I have to have from this issue…

- Philosophy Hope in a Jar High Performance SPF 20 - “People obsess over its impressive antiaging effects (from lactic acid and antioxidants)- now they’ve added five different types of super-shielding SPF and extra hydrators”

- Clinique Superdefense SPF 25 Age Defense Moisturizer - “This classic moisturizer is souped-up with ultra-long lasting UVA protection and red micro-algae extract for brightening”

- Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb Bomblicious Hair Mist - “Jasmine and freesia make this delicate, ultra feminine , and a little spicy”

- Dermalogica Solar Defense Booster SPF 30 - “Great as a full-spectrum sun block alone or mixed with equal parts moisturizer or foundation; this is milky and extra light.”

- The Organic Pharmacy Double Rose Rejuvenating Face Cream - “Rose hip oil blended with equally nourishing ginger and marigold extracts for super-intense (and organic) dose of hydration”

- Weleda Wild Rose Moisture Cream - “Weleda makes some of the best all-natural lotions and creams out there. This one makes your skin feel and look amazing as soon as you put it on”

- Shu Uemura 100% Natural Origin Fragrance Fleur de Source - “Gorgeous, all-natural oils create a clean, cool combination of fresh basil and papyrus”

- Van Cleef and Arpels Ferie - “The elaborate cap (a fairy perched on a branch) is as appealingly playful as the scent: crisp violet with vetiver”

- Bulgari Jasmin Noir - “Against a backdrop of almonds, this merges the many scents of jasmine (which change significantly throughout the day), making something wonderfully complex”

- Lancome Magnifique - “If the color red had a scent, this would be it: Bulgarian Rose and sandalwood are strong and sophisticated"

- Creed Love in Black - Night-blooming wildflowers from Greece mingle with cedar and Italian iris” (How many times can I say how MUCH I want this fragrance!!)

- Tocca Bridgette - “Named for Bridgette Bardot, this mimics a spice market in Marseille, with rose petals and ginger”

- Beckham Signature for Her - So pretty and incredibly wearable; with orchids and a touch of licorice, it feels really new”

Ok so WOWOWOWOWOW!!! I have found a ton of new perfumes that I want to get this fall. I love floral fragrances and I wear them all during the spring and summer and I don’t stop the florals during the colder months, I just wearing stronger, more oriental florals.

With everything else that I loved in this issue, I didn’t think that it would be possible for Jean Godrey June’s column to raise my excitement level even further. But somehow, it did just that. She wrote about the new Gwen Stefani fragrances and the adorable bottles that they come it. Her favorite of the group is the Baby scent, but I really want to try them all. She also writes about her overuse of the word “fantastic” and how it is now a new nail polish color from Chanel. It is wine-berry red that is equally “fantastic” for manicures or pedicures and gets me really excited to run to local Chanel counter for this shade.

This whole issues can be summed up in one word…FANTASTIC.

Summer to Fall Beauty

So I have been absent from this blog for over two weeks now and I do apologize to the readers that were checking in daily, hoping for updates. I work a full time job and I go to college at night and last week I had a huge test in my night class which studying for consumed any and all free time that I had. But my test is over and I am back for now.

Sometime between working and schoolwork, I woke up to realize that summer is really over and fall had begun. It began with tightness in my cheeks and ended with my test driving deep red lipstick the other day. I mourned the putting away of my Island Michael Kors but got really excited to get my favorite perfume ever (Stella) out and begin using it.

I may finally be time to use all the new products that I bought for this fall, but the companies are beginning to release the collections for Holiday and I have to keep thinking ahead to snow, shimmery eye makeup, and what my Christmas list is going to look like. I feel that I waited for fall to begin to for so long and it is already starting to pass me by in this time of busyness.
