I have decided that the China Glaze collection that we looked at the other day will be my last holiday collection of the year. Many of the special gifts that were put out by Tarte and Stila are already sold out and I cannot see the point in showcasing products and collections that are sold out and have little to no chance of being restocked. I am guessing that I started my holiday collection coverage a bit too late this year, other blogs had pictures of products from these two brands up in the end of September...a time when I was in no mood to even think about the holidays. I am also starting to get excited for spring after reading the Spring Trend Report in the last issue of Allure. I think that I will have coverage of the upcoming spring trends coming within the next three weeks.
Today I wanted to focus on a great skincare product from Caudalie, I have been loving the Divine Oil as my skin is changing with the end of the fall and the beginning of the winter season. I bought this product at the end of October and saved it until my skin got a bit drier as the temperatures dropped. I bought this oil to use as a body moisturizer but I didn't realize that it could be used on the hair and face also. I have only tried it on my body and sprayed into my hair so I can't comment on facial use but I can review how it worked in the other two scenarios.
"A luxurious dry oil that provides nourishing moisture and lasting comfort to body, face, and hair. Divine Oil contains a blend of grape seed, hibiscus, sesame, and argan oils combined with patented grape seed antioxidant polyphenols to leave skin soft, visibly firm, and radiant. Perfect as a post-sun product, its glamorous texture is instantly absorbed, imparting a subtle, floral, and sunkissed fragrance.", states the Sephora website.
Caudalie is a brand that it well known for using grapes as a main ingredient, the anti-oxidant benefits of grapes and wine are becoming more popular in both the United States and Europe. This brand has harnessed the power of grapes ever since its first few products and I have used this brand for many years. I always get excited when new products come out and I have wanted to try this oil for the past few months. I had wanted to order the oil since late last winter and forgot until the weather warmed up too much to reap all the benefits of oil. I tend to use oils more in the fall and winter but this oil is light enough that I could it in all but the warmest months of the summer.
The key ingredients contained in this multi-purpose oil are...
- Grape Oil: Rejuvenates and nourishes.
- Extra Virgin Argan Oil: Restores hydrolipidic film.
- Sesame Oil: Softens and moisturizes.
- Patented Anti-oxidant Grape Seed Polyphenols
Divine Oil provides a light spray of oil all over the body or hair. I spray it right onto the skin and then rub it in with my hands, it hydrates quickly and leaves little to no residue on the skin. I also liked to use it as a pre-shampoo oil treatment on the ends of my hair. I shied away from using this oil on my face as it has a bit more fragrance contained in it than I normally like to use on my face.
The fragrance is a light floral with a hint of green notes. It is a slightly more floral version of their best selling perfume and I would also love a perfume in this fragrance for the spring. The fragrance will let me use this oil into the warmer weather and I will see how long I can use it into the spring and summer months.

Fresh Black Tea Instant Perfecting Face Mask
I have been wary to try any new skincare products the past few weeks ever since my skin went crazy at the beginning of this month but I need to start opening some of the products that I have bought to get my skin ready for the cooler temperatures. I wanted to ease into it and decided to start with the a Fresh mask as my skin has never reacted to one of their products and I have been using them for a few years now. I bought the Black Tea in stead of the Rose but want to try that one very soon too. The Black Tea Mask is about providing anti-oxidant protection to the skin and added hydration, both of which I need the most in the fall and winter months. I have used in twice so far and I am quite happy with this mask so I am sure that this will become a winter staple and then I will investigate switching it on and off with the Rose Face Mask.
The Fresh Black Tea Instant Perfecting Face Mask will be a staple in my skincare regime to help my skin retain moisture and appear healthier as the cold air sets in. I ordered the product from Sephora and I will provide their product description, "A hydrating treatment that immediately reveals softer, firmer, healthier-looking skin. Black Tea Instant Perfecting Mask with advanced antioxidants is a hydrating treatment that immediately reveals softer, firmer, healthier-looking skin. The innovative formula’s velvety whipped texture has an immediate cooling effect to refresh the skin and the senses. Black tea ferment, also known as Kombucha, is an advanced antioxidant that helps to defend against wrinkle-causing free radicals while softening, smoothing, and enhancing luster. The formula is further enriched with lychee seed extract, known to support natural collagen, firming polysaccharides that help to smooth the skin, and jicima root juice, notable for its hydrating and nourishing properties."
Fresh co-founder Lez Glazman adds more information about the development of the mask formula. 'After first trying Kombucha, a drink made with black tea ferment, I noticed an instant boost in my energy levels and began researching the extract at once. Referred to as the ‘Immortal Health Elixir,’ its history traces back to 250 B.C. I found that just as it reenergized my body, black tea works to reenergize the skin’s cells"'
The first reason that I was attracted to this mask is that I love to drink unsweetened black iced tea from Starbucks and I drink it about three times a week all throughout the year. I find that green tea has more of the soothing effect and the black tea will keep me going all day long. It's nice to see that this effect was not all in my head after reviewing Glazman's statement and that this mask will help my skin in a similar fashion.
As stated before, I have used this mask twice in the past ten days and I have liked it very much so far. The instructions do say to use it for five to twenty minutes at a time twice or three times a week. I think that I will move into using it twice a week, I wanted to start slow with how many skin issues I had at the beginning of the month. I use the mask on clean skin for about ten minutes and really like that I can see and feel a difference right after rinsing the product off. My skin typically feels dry right after I get out of the shower and towel off. I need to get some type of serum or cream on my face quickly or my cheeks will begin to hurt. After use of this product, I don't get the dryness right after I get out of the shower and my skin holds the moisture in better. I could not skip face cream but I use less and my skin looks much smoother and clearer than before I started using it. The effect lasts for the next two showers after use so I do think that using it as Fresh directs will continue to improve my skin even more.
The mask not only helps to hydrate my skin but it brightens my overall complexion. The redness in my cheeks is reduced and I need have needed a bit less foundation since I have started use of this product. The texture is very appealing, it is thick jelly and actually feels cool when applied to the skin. It is does not "dry" and absorbs mostly into the skin when a thin layer is applied all over the face. This mask is very easy to use and works very well, I will start using it twice a week and then hope to see even more results in my skin.

Caudalie Vinosource S.O.S. Eye Rescue
Eye cream is one of the few products that I only order when I am completely out of and one of the very few products that I do not stockpile. I have several face creams that I haven't opened yet but only use one eye cream at a time. I tend to use very small amounts of this type of product and will use the same product night and day for about six months, products would end up spoiling before I ever got to them if I tried to stockpile eye creams. My newest eye cream is one from one of my favorite skincare companies and a company that I have used eye creams from before.
I have a good amount of concerns about my eye area. I have under eye circles, puffiness, and am having early concerns about aging. I am quite picky abut the formula that I will choose to use for the next six months and want to get the best results in all three of the above aspects. Caudalie is well known for being a brand that focuses on anti-oxidants and would help to prevent some of the early signs of aging and this is one of the reasons that I went right to this brand when I needed to order a new eye cream from the Sephora website. I chose a newer formula from this brand and one that I was very excited to try. After a week of use, I firmly recommend this product and will be ordering it again.
The first eye cream that I used from this company was the Eye Contour Cream, I am not sure that this product is still available from the company. I would have ordered that one again but I saw the newest formula and wanted to this one out. The Vinosource S.O.S. Eye Rescue is another product in the Vinosource line, the hydrating and protecting line of products from this company.
The Sephora website states the following information for the product description. "An eye cream to de-puff, soothe, and brighten tired eyes. This treatment quenches and soothes the eye area upon application, leaving eye contours looking rested, fresh, and naturally glowing. It hydrates, soothes, and de-puffs with antioxidant polyphenols, moisturizing grape water, and calming white tea extract. This product is ophthalmologist tested on sensitive eyes and fragrance-free. It does not contain animal ingredients and is not tested on animals."
The Sephora website also provides some of the results of the studies performed on the product...
"In a Corneometry® on 12 volunteers:
- 127% increase in hydration
In a clinical trial on 20 volunteers:
- 61% decrease in skin sensitivity"
They are provide more information on the active ingredients contain in the Vinosource S.O.S. Eye Rescue Cream. "Organic Grape Water: Reduces skin sensitivity and increases hydration. Patented Grape Polyphenols: Protect skin from premature aging caused by UV rays, pollution, and environmental aggressors by forming a shield against free radicals; reinforce capillaries, boost cutaneous microcirculation, and help maintain an optimal level of hyaluronic acid in the dermis to preserve suppleness and elasticity. Vinolevure®: Captures and retains water to prevent dehydration and reinforces skin’s immune defenses."
I have a lot to say about this eye cream and it is all very good. The texture is easy for any skin type to use, it is a cream-gel formula that sinks easily into the skin and doesn't leave any type of residue on the under eye area. I love this aspect because I need a smooth surface for foundation and concealer. This primes the skin very well for these two products and allows smooth and easy application. I have to use less product on my eyes because this eye cream makes the application much easier.
This product hydrates my entire under eye area and I use it at night for this aspect, the area is plumped up and looked much brighter and smoother than before application. In the morning, I love many of the same aspects plus how nicely it helps to deflate the puffiness in my under eye area. I have been seeing some nice results over the past week and I expect to see even more as I continue to use the product for the next few months. The anti-oxidant properties of this eye cream will help to continue to protect my skin for the time that I use this product.
This is another product that I highly recommend from the Caudalie skincare line and it only adds to the list of product that I love from this company. I love new products from this company and I will continue to buy more from them in the coming years.

Fitness Friday - Cherries
After two Fitness Fridays of yoga poses, I am returning to one of my favorite aspects of the summer months and one of the biggest benefits of the season - fresh fruit and eating it every single day. The health benefits of cherries are numerous and it almost seems like cheating because they also happen to be one of my favorite fruits to eat. I will start buying dried ones in the fall and winter but for now I will be buying as many fresh cherries as I can until the end of the season.
I have been eating cherries in the summer for many years now but I was not aware of all the health benefits that they contain until I found the following articles from Fox News. I had mainly bought cherries because I liked the taste and they provided more servings of fruit in my day (and contained less calories and helped contain my cravings for sugar throughout the day). Now I have learned that this red berries contain more benefits than I thought possible.
Fox News is not on my viewing list and I would not have found this great article unless I was searching Google on this topic. This article was authored by Tanya Zuckerbrot MS RD, a New York City registered dietitian and author of the "Miracle Carb Diet: Make Calories and Fat Disappear" and "F-Factor Diet". I see that I need to look in the library for these books and report back. Here is her article on the health benefits of one of my new favorite fruits...
"Cherries help ease arthritis pain
For those who suffer from arthritis and gout, you will be relieved to find out that adding cherries to your diet can greatly decrease the intense pain associated with those ailments. Excess uric acid in the blood is the culprit behind the excruciating pain that causes swelling, tenderness and inflammation. A study done by the USDA found that uric acid can be reduced by as much as 15 percent by eating 2 cups of Bing cherries. Cherries can also help reduce painful inflammation by decreasing the amount of C-reactive protein produced. So add a little zing to your diet by choosing Bing (cherries).
Cherries help fight cancer
The distinctive deep red pigment cherries are known for comes from flavonoids; powerful antioxidants that help fight free radicals in the body. Cyanidin is a flavonoid from the anthocyanin group found in cherries that helps keep cancerous cells from growing out of control. And, for cherries with the most anthocyanins go for sweet cherries with the deepest pigment; crimson-purple rather than bright red.
Cherries help you sleep
If sipping a cup of chamomile isn’t enough to induce restful sleep try having tart cherry juice before bed. Tart cherries contain melatonin, a hormone that helps make you feel sleepy. Two tablespoons of tart cherry juice has been shown in studies to be just as effective as a melatonin supplement. So, pour yourself a little cherry juice nightcap for a tasty bedtime sleep aid.
Cherries and blood pressure
Cherries are an excellent source of potassium, which helps to lower blood pressure by getting rid of the excess sodium in our body. Eating cherries helps keep potassium and sodium in balance, and can prevent hypertension from occurring. One cup of cherries has the same amount of potassium as a banana making it a great substitute when you are not in the mood for another ho-hum banana.
Cherries help keep you trim
Eating cherries can help you lose weight and stay trim. A cup of cherries is less than 100 calories and packs in 3 grams of fiber, which will keep you feeling full longer. Also, these little beauties contain many B-vitamins such as thiamin, riboflavin and vitamin B6; these vitamins are crucial for metabolism and convert nutrients into energy. What could be better than eating cherries to help you stay lean and skinny?
Tip: Cherries are not only healthy, but they are delicious and versatile. They can be added to everything from dairy, to pork; eaten raw or cooked down to make a sauce or strained for juice. Serve them by the bowlful for dessert at your next summer barbecue; just be sure to have plenty of napkins and bowls for the pits!"
I already knew that cherries were a good low calorie snack but I didn't know all about the fiber content and all the B-vitamins that are packed into one little serving of cherries. I have never heard about the melatonin content of cherries and I want to try and find tart cherry juice next time that I visit Wegmans (I don't think that I will be able to juice them myself without a juicer). I am also wondering if I would be able to find a cherry tea to use at night, I will see what I can find next time I go food shopping.

Fitness Friday - Blueberries
It is time again for Fitness Friday, yesterday I took my first yoga lesson and I am still sore from all of the new positions that I learned (and probably looked terrible doing) and I decided that our second Friday should be about one of my favorite healthy snacks in the summer months. I love blueberry everything but spend most of my time eating them straight in the middle of the summer. We are in the season for locally grown (at least as close as New Jersey is to me) blueberries and I can get easily and eat as many as I want. My favorite fruit is still strawberries but blueberries are a close second and they contribute to making summer one of my favorite seasons and the one where I have the easiest time eating a healthy diet and really enjoying it at the exact same time.
The World's Healthiest Foods website has a great feature on this superfood, "In terms of U.S. fruit consumption, blueberries rank only second to strawberries in popularity of berries. Blueberries are not only popular, but also repeatedly ranked in the U.S. diet as having one of the highest antioxidant capacities among all fruits, vegetables, spices and seasonings. Antioxidants are essential to optimizing health by helping to combat the free radicals that can damage cellular structures as well as DNA. We recommend enjoying raw blueberries — rather than relying upon blueberries incorporated into baked desserts — because, like other fruits, raw blueberries provide you with the best flavor and the greatest nutritional benefits. As one of the few fruits native to North America, blueberries have been enjoyed by Native Americans for hundreds of years. They have also enjoyed great popularity around the world in cuisines from Asia to the Mediterranean. For more on the Healthiest Way of Preparing Blueberries, see below."
"What's New and Beneficial about Blueberries.
After many years of research on blueberry antioxidants and their potential benefits for the nervous system and for brain health, there is exciting new evidence that blueberries can improve memory. In a study involving older adults (with an average age of 76 years), 12 weeks of daily blueberry consumption was enough to improve scores on two different tests of cognitive function including memory. While participants in the study consumed blueberries in the form of juice, three-quarters of a pound of blueberries were used to make each cup of juice. As participants consumed between 2 to 2-1/2 cups each day, the participants actually received a very plentiful amount of berries. The authors of this study were encouraged by the results and suggested that blueberries might turn out to be beneficial not only for improvement of memory, but for slowing down or postponing the onset of other cognitive problems frequently associated with aging.
New studies make it clear that we can freeze blueberries without doing damage to their delicate anthocyanin antioxidants. There's no question about the delicate nature of many antioxidant nutrients found in blueberries. These antioxidants include many different types of anthocyanins, the colorful pigments that give many foods their wonderful shades of blue, purple, and red. After freezing blueberries at temperatures of 0°F (-17°C) or lower for periods of time between 3-6 months, researchers have discovered no significant lowering of overall antioxidant capacity or anthocyanin concentrations. Anthocyanins studied have included malvidins, delphinidins, pelargonidins, cyanidins, and peonidins. These findings are great news for anyone who grows, buys, or picks fresh berries in season and wants to enjoy them year round. They are also great news for anyone who has restricted access to fresh blueberries but can find them in the freezer section of the market.
Berries in general are considered low in terms of their glycemic index (GI). GI is a common way of identifying the potential impact of a food on our blood sugar level once we've consumed and digested that food. In general, foods with a GI of 50 or below are considered "low" in terms of their glycemic index value. When compared to other berries, blueberries are not particularly low in terms of their GI. Studies show the GI for blueberries as falling somewhere in the range of 40-53, with berries like blackberries, raspberries, and strawberries repeatedly scoring closer to 30 than to 40. However, a recent study that included blueberries as a low-GI fruit has found that blueberries, along with other berries, clearly have a favorable impact on blood sugar regulation in persons already diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Participants in the study who consumed at last 3 servings of low-GI fruits per day (including blueberries) saw significant improvement in their regulation of blood sugar over a three-month period of time. (Their blood levels of glycosylated hemoglobin, or HgA1C were used as the standard of measurement in this study.) It's great to see blueberries providing these clear health benefits for blood sugar regulation!
If you want to maximize your antioxidant benefits from blueberries, go organic! A recent study has directly compared the total antioxidant capacity of organically grown versus non-organically grown highbush blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum L., var. Bluecrop) and found some very impressive results for the organically grown berries. Organically grown blueberries turned out to have significantly higher concentrations of total phenol antioxidants and total anthocyanin antioxidants than conventionally grown blueberries, as well as significantly higher total antioxidant capacity. Numerous specific antioxidant anthocyanins were measured in the study, including delphinidins, malvidins, and petunidins. The antioxidant flavonoid quercetin was also measured. "
Let's trim this done and sum up the benefits! Blueberries are best when eaten by themselves or mixed with plain Greek Yogurt and a bit of brown sugar (as I enough eating them), they taste great in dessert but this isn't the best way to reap the health benefits of them. I want to try making a smoothie with these same ingredients and see how well they work together in this medium. I primarily use this fruit for it's anti-oxidant properties and low sugar level, this is one of the few fruits that I love that don't top out my sugars and carbs for the day.
My next steps will be to investigate how to freeze this fruit or to find out where I can buy them already frozen in the dead of winter, this should allow me to make healthy smoothies all throughout the year and keep reaping the benefits of the fruit when I can't get it as easily as usual. I also want to look for the blueberry juices that this article talks about and start reaping the health benefits this way too. I learn a few great facts from this article and I look forward to continuing to learn more about my favorite foods over the next Fridays!

Skincare Ingredients Week Day Seven - Korres Wild Rose Face and Eye Serum
Today we one the last day of my Skincare Ingredients Theme Week, yesterday we looked at what might be one of my new favorite ingredients and today I have saved my favorite ingredient ever for the last day of the week. I have loved Rose in all forms; skincare, perfume, and body products. I have used rose in every single form that it is available in and I am also burning a rose candle made for me by a friend while I type this, I love rose fragrances and I also enjoy reaping the beneficial ingredients to the skin. Rose is one of the oldest ingredients and one of the best soothing and hydrating ingredients that can be used in skincare, I need as much as soothing and hydrating as possible so I am all about roses.
Korres has one of the most popular wild rose skincare product lines and the company also provides lots of information about this ingredient on the Sephora website so I am just going to pull all my information from here rather than searching on botany and chemistry website as I was doing for entries earlier this week. "Whether you covet long-lasting hydration, skin-perfecting makeup, or an intensive treatment product, Korres' Wild Rose Collection offers a complete regimen designed to brighten, revitalize, and protect your skin. As with all Korres' natural skincare and color products, the Wild Rose collection is formulated to achieve maximum, long-lasting results using highly effective, natural extracts. What you won't find: harsh chemicals and synthetic ingredients. What you will find: skin-friendly products loaded with wild rose oil. Rich in vitamin C, wild rose oil offers potent antioxidant protection and also works to fight fine lines and hyperpigmentation. It can even assist in cell regeneration and in improving skin texture. End result? Gorgeous skin with a natural glow."
To reap all the benefits of wild rose, I decided to purchase the serum that is packed full of this ingredient. I have used the moisturizer in the past and loved it so I am more than happy to order more items from Korres. "Rich in wild rose oil, Wild Rose skincare formulas form a protective barrier on the epidermis that improves the texture of the skin and, more importantly, allow cells to regenerate. That’s great news for those with fine lines and wrinkles; dark under-eye circles; a dull, uneven skintone; and hyperpigmentation. An ultra-concentrated vitamin C face and eye serum that is clinically proven to brighten skin, smooth the look of fine lines, and improve skin texture. Brighten skin, smooth fine lines, and even the skin texture with this potent natural serum. Ultra-concentrated vitamin C found in wild rose helps to repair skin discolorations while boosting skin’s brightness and radiance. Baobab tree extract, in combination with a wheat proteins agent, provides an instant firming and line-smoothing effect and has been clinically proven to considerably reduce the number, depth, and length of wrinkles. "
A few lab results from the testing phase...
Clinically proven results after 60 days:
- 100% of women showed improved skin brightness and radiance
- 100% of women showed improved skin smoothness
This serum is best when used twice a day, I started out with one usage a day and after two weeks, I saw absolutely no results. I decided to change up my routine and begin using it both morning and night. After two weeks using it in this method, I got much better results so I guess sometimes it pays to actually read the directions. The serum has a thicker texture than most, I would say that this serum is best for normal to dry and sensitive skin types. It absorbs in quickly and my skin seemed to simply love the texture of this serum.
This serum mostly hydrated and brighten my complexion, it has Vitamin C in it to enhance the wild rose extract but I didn't reap any of the anti-aging benefits since I have no visible signs of aging. My overall complexion looks much better than it did before and I would purchase another tube of this without hesitation, I know that I will buy another bottle of this before winter comes around next week since this is the time of the year when my skin gets really ugly. I will also be ordering more from the Wild Rose collection over the next few months.
Well Skincare Ingredients Theme Week has ended and I hope that I have given you some new products to try and ingredients to look for. Feel free to add any comments about your favorite products with these ingredients in and I will look for them.

Skincare Ingredients Week Day Six - Fresh Soy Face Cleanser
Yesterday we looked at a very effective treatment ingredient for oily and acne-prone skin and today we will look at an ingredient that is recommended for all skin types. Soy foods and soy milk are fast becoming part of the mainstream and now soy-based skincare products are quickly beginning to catch up their fame. Whenever you mention soy products to anyone beauty and skincare addict, the first line that will pop into their head is the best-selling and top-rated line of soy-based face products from Fresh. Indeed, these are some of the best-selling products are from this collection but I don't believe that all their fans truly understand what makes this line so great. I have just started using face care from Fresh slightly over a year ago, starting with a eye cream and now I have been branching out to the rest of their skin line. I have had many people recommend the Fresh Soy Face Cleanser to me over the years and when I was listing ingredients that I wanted to look at, soy and Fresh seemed to be a very natural combination. I know how much love this product gets and I wanted to look into the formula and learn why I love it so much.
Soy is a calming and hydrating ingredient that also helps to deal with redness and pigmentation issues. Soy can penetrate underneath the top layer of the epidermis and will help to correct signs of depigmentation on a deeper level by promoting healthy cell growth. The presence of soy and the plant phytoestrogens contained in it will help to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin and help your skin cells regenerate. This ingredient can be used for both correcting the visible signs of aging and helping to ward off some of the signs, this is an all-around hard working ingredient and can achieve results without a potentially irritating mix of ingredients. In addition, soy hydrates below the skin's top layer and contains anti-oxidants yet too. After learning all this, I decided that soy might be one of my new favorite skincare ingredients and one that I want to be purchasing more of in the future.
I have started my journey with soy skincare products with the Fresh Soy Face Cleanser and now I am very much looking forward to buy more products from this line. "A multitasking gel that gently removes impurities and makeup. The Soy Face Cleanser from Fresh instantly whisks away everyday impurities and makeup—even mascara—without stripping the skin of essential moisture. Rich in amino acids, soy proteins promote moisture retention, elasticity, and firmness. Rosewater balances and tones the skin. Fragrance-free and soap-free, calming cucumber extract and nourishing borage seed oil enriches its formula. This product is extra gentle and ideal for all skin types. "In the early nineties, there was a buzz about the health benefits of soy, but no one was exploring its effects on the skin. We found that it is highly rich in amino acids, which help with cell turnover and introduced soy to the beauty market in 1999." —Lev Glazman and Alina Roytberg, Fresh Founders.
This face wash is technically a gel formula but I feel that it is best described as a cream-gel. A dime-sized drop provides enough product to cover my entire face and it really foams up, in fact I was surprised at the foam level that it provided as it is creamy than your typical gel cleanser. I didn't like the foam level the first time that I used it, I immediately assumed that it would dry my skin out and that this would be a product that I wouldn't like but I soon changed my opinion. This product didn't dry out my skin or make my redness any worse, my skin actually felt better after using this product than it did before and I was very happy that I had decided to buy the largest size of this product at Sephora. I did not even try to use this product to get my eye makeup off, there is simply no plain face wash that will get all of my eye makeup off and I always use a separate eye makeup remover, I will not comment on how well/not well this product gets eye makeup off. It removed the rest of my makeup without an issue, an aspect that makes me very happy.
Based on the hydrating and anti-oxidant properties of this ingredient, I am very much looking forward to buying this ingredient in a day cream or perhaps a sunscreen. Fresh has several products in the soy line and I will be checking them out the next time that I go to Sephora.
One more day and one more ingredient!

Skincare Ingredients Week Day One - Murad Essential C Day Moisture
One of the most popular ingredients in skincare is Vitamin C and therefore this is where I decided to start off the Theme Week. Vitamin C has been used by more brands than I can count and is used in products designed to reduce and prevent the signs of aging, along with products that help to protect the skin from free radical damage and improve the overall complexion. This ingredient has potential benefits for all types of skin but can also irritate or be completely ineffective if not at the correct concentration and stabilization. A bit of extra research is worth it before purchasing any type of product with this active ingredient. When shopping for products with this active ingredient, I recommend shopping only from brands with a very reputable following and not trying to buy cheap skincare products. Quality Vitamin C products will cost extra to ensure that the active ingredient is in the correct concentration and the correct level of stabilization.
A bit of background on Vitamin C itself will be first. When I took Organic Chemistry in college, Vitamin C was considered too complex and large to be studied in the first two semesters of this topic. Therefore I have really never done any formal study of this exact complex and this post is my first time going into the complex chemistry behind the Vitamin C molecule. Vitamin C as contained in skincare products could also be listed under the name of L-ascorbic Acid, this is the only form that is effective for the face and if the "L" is not present in the complex, there will be no benefits to use of this product. This is the main reason that it is worth the extra time and effort to check out the products before you make the purchase. L-ascorbic Acid helps to stimulate collagen production and this is why is used very heavily in anti-aging products. Collagen production is the major goal of most anti-aging products and finding an effective Vitamin C product is worth the search. L-ascorbic Acid is also heavily used in products that promise anti-oxidant benefits, this complex also helps to fight free radical damage by binding to the particles before they attract themselves to the skin and begin do damage to the upper layers of the epidermis. This complex will neutralize the charged free radicals and prevent the damage to the epidermis. A good Vitamin C product is worth its weight in gold.
What the drawbacks to this ingredient? No skincare ingredient (at least ones that work) are without some drawbacks/side effects. L-ascorbic Acid can be irritating to sensitive skin types and sensitivity to this ingredient can come out if if you don't have "sensitive" skin. At effective levels, this ingredient can cause redness, dryness, and overall irritation. At very high levels, this ingredient is most effective when used under a doctor's care. I have had a hard time in the past trying to find a product with the effective levels of Vitamin C that doesn't harm my skin more than help it.
The best line of Vitamin C products that I have used is the Essential C line of products from Dr. Murad's skincare line. I have used several products from this line over the years and today we will look at the Day Cream that is offered with this line. This line is also known as the Environmental Shield, "Daily exposure to sunlight, smog, pollution and stress is the number one cause of premature aging. Murad's Environmental Shield® product line will help to restore, renew, and protect your skin against sun damage, preventing and reversing environmental damage through the Science of Cellular Water™."
Essential-C Day Moisture is the SPF-enriched day cream from this line, using Vitamin C during the day will help to fight off the free radicals that attach to your skin all throughout the day. This type of cream is especially valuable if you live or work in the city, smog throws off some of the worst free radicals and assaults your skin throughout the whole day. "A powerful, antioxidant-rich sunscreen that shields and restores environmentally stressed skin. Block UVA and UVB while preventing free-radical damage with this complexion-protecting essential. The advanced formula multitasks, improving the skin's barrier function to maintain optimal hydration."
This formula is best for normal to slightly dry skin and gave me the best results when used in the spring and summer months, I did not find it hydrating enough for winter skin issues. A dime-sized drop was all that I needed to cover my whole face and the product absorbed in quickly and didn't leave a residue (I have found that some products with a higher SPF will leave a film on the skin). This product is hydrating enough to keep my skin soft throughout the day and is smooth enough that I can still apply primer and all the needed face makeup over it. This is the best Vitamin C cream for that I have found for skin that doesn't always like Vitamin C.
The Murad collection of Vitamin C products is one of the few that I truly trust to be effective yet not cause more harm than good to sensitive skin. If you really want to reap the benefits of this ingredient than I do recommend using this day cream and then matching night cream. I am most interested in this ingredient to help protect my skin and I love how effective it is.

Beauty Loves Week Day Seven - Caudalie Vinoperfect Radiance Facial Serum
Today is the last day of my Beauty Loves Theme Week and I am hoping that at least one of two things have occurred for you this week; first I hope that I have shown you all one or two new products that you will want to try out for yourself, and secondly I hope that you have thought about some of your favorite beauty products and how much you have come to love them over the years. Over this week, we have looked makeup, perfumes, and one of the best body products in the world but we haven't talked about any type of skincare product yet. Today we change that, Caudalie's Vinoperfect Radiance Facial Serum is a product that I have raved over for years and was a natural to make a Beauty Loves Week. I was not one of the lucky ladies that was blessed with perfect skin and I have to use multiple products every single to keep it clear, hydrated, and to reduce the redness. There are very few skincare products that I love and I almost always seem to be trying new products, especially facial serums and hydrators. The Vinoperfect Serum from Caudalie is one of the few that I have never hesitated to repurchase and will rave about to anyone that is interested in the skincare line.
Caudalie is a French skincare line that is based around the concept on Vinotherapie, the use of grape-seed anti-oxidants to protect and repair the skin. My skin is sensitive and easily irritated so I have issues with products that have excess chemicals or unnatural fragrances in them and make my skin worse than before use. I have never had problems with anything from Caudalie and at this point I have purchased almost every single product in the line. I was first recommended the Vinoperfect Serum in late 2006, when Bath and Body Works still carried this line of skincare. I bought a bottle or it and used it twice a day as directed. Within a week, I was getting all kinds of compliments on how lovely my skin looked and how good I looked overall. The best compliments are the ones on my skin, it is very easy to apply a flattering lipstick shade but much harder to reap results from the perfect skincare product!
"A highly concentrated oil-free serum that improves the appearance of dark spots, promotes even skintone, and boosts radiance. Highly concentrated with naturally powerful Viniferine, this satiny serum counters existing dark spots such as acne marks, scars, and damage, while preventing their reappearance revealing a brighter, more even complexion. This non-comedogenic, oil-free formula is perfect for all skin types. For best results, use Vinoperfect Day Fluid or Vinoperfect Day Perfecting Cream in the morning and Vinoperfect Cell Renewal Night Cream in the evening. Viniferine, a natural compound found in vine sap known to brighten, lighten, and even skin, was patented by Caudalie in 2004."
"Based on in vitro testing, conducted by the Montpellier Faculty of Pharmacy, of the inhibiting action of Viniferine on tyrosinase:
- 62 times more effective than vitamin C
- 4 times more effective than kojic acid
- 13 times more effective than arbutin in boosting skin radiance and fighting dark spots
In a test carried out on 20 volunteers after use of Vinoperfect Regimen, under dermatological control:
- Volunteers saw disappearance of one or more dark spots after 56 days."
I have no issues with dark spots but this serum was recommended to me to help soothe and redness the appearance of the redness in my cheek area. This serum is recommended for problem skin types and helps to soothe and uses plant botanicals to brighten the skintone. This product reduces the redness in my cheek area and improves my overall facial complexion. This is one of the few brightening serums that I have found to really work as it promises...and without irritating skin. Some of the brightening serums that are effective have Vitamin C or Kojic Acid is, both very effective brightening ingredients, but ones that can be very irritating to my skin and are pretty touch and go for me. This serum from Caudalie is one of the very few products that I have tried to far and manages to marry being effective and not irritating my already inflamed skin.
This week has allowed me to look back on some of the products that I have come to love over the years and will continue to repurchase and use until they are no longer available. All of these beauty products have lasted longer than my relationships and even though I am single this Valentine's Day, I still have some items to reflect on and love!

Lancome Bienfait Multi-Vital SPF 30 Cream
Winter is almost here and that means one major fact for me - I will end up buying a ton of new skincare items and will go through them like crazy. Early last December, I ended up buying or ordering from Sephora almost every single weeek because I was running through skincare products like crazy and then I was finding that some of the ones that I bought just weren't hydrating enough for the winter and had to be put away until the spring months. My goal is head this off at the pass this year and start picking up some new skincare items now, especially the heavy duy face creams that I always end up needing this time of the year and for the next three months. I can already feel that my face is much drier than it was several weeks and is beginning to feel tight and dry right after I wash it. And everyone who is reading this knows that it will only get worse in the upcoming weeks...
My first skincare purchase of the late fall/early winter months is the Lancome Bienfiar Multi-Vital SPF 30 Cream. I first tried this product in a Sephora skincare sample bag and liked it enough to buy it the other week at the Lancome counter. At first, I wasn't even sure what exactly this product was, the typing on the Sephora sample was very small and I couldn't make out if it was a SPF face cream or just a sunblock. Once I first tried the product, I quickly figured out that it was a thick face cream that contained an SPF, it was much too thick for just an SPF and a product of this texture would be very hard to layer with another face cream.
The best product description is found on the Lancome website. "Containing a complex of nurturing Vitamins E, B5 and CG plus high potency moisturization, this greaseless formula provides 24-hour hydration. Your skin will look its healthy best and feel touchably soft all day. With Broad Spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen and essential antioxidant protection, Bienfait Multi-Vital gives your skin what it needs to help fight the visible effects of environmental skin damage. Results: Skin is hydrated, looks its healthy best, and feels touchably soft all day. Normal to dry skin, even sensitive skin. Non-comedogenic. Dermatologist-tested for safety. Recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation."
Anyone that has used French skincare before will have no problems understanding why this is a top selling face cream in that country. To those who have not, I will provide a few more details. This cream has a high SPF in it, higher than most that are available from major brands in the United States. Most face creams don't really live up the SPF that is promised on the label, to achieve the full SPF benefits the product must be applied in a thick, even layer. Most of use do not apply our face creams as thickly as they should be, especially those of us who layer foundation and concealer on yet too. So if you use an SPF of 30, it is more at the 15 protection level and an SPF 15 is next to no protection. Sorry to burst your bubbles everyone, but this is why I prefer to use separate sunscreen products for my face.
French women are also more likely to prefer very rich hydrating products and this face cream certinaly lives up to that standard. I would only recommend this for the driest of skin types, this cream is so thick that I had to warm it in my hand before applying it to my face in order to get it to fully absorb and this product could be overdone very easily. I wouldn't recommend this face cream for those with normal skin, however I see on the Lancome website that it is available in a lighter lotion formula, so all the benefits can still be reaped with a lighter formula.
This cream contains many anti-oxidant protection benefits, I wouldn't list this as a solely anti-aging moisturizer. It has the potential to help correct some of the signs of anging, however it is most powerful in preventing the signs and helping to brighten the overall complexion. The vitamins and anti-oxidants helped to make my skin look a bit brighter, one of my favorite aspects of it when I first tried out my deluxe sample and that caused me to purchase the acutal product, my skin takes on a grayish pallor during the winter months and I will try any product that promises me some kind of brightening benefits. The Vitamins E and B5 are mostly responsible for these benefits and are the major reason why I prefer anti-oxidant facial products over any other type of formulation. This didn't deliver as dramatic a result as a traditional brightening serum would but it certainly help to make my skin looks clearer and healthier at this time of the year. Maximum brightening benefits would be reached by using this product with a brightening serum at least once or twice a day. I only use this product during the day since it contains the high SPF, there is no point in using this product at night.
This is one of the first (if not the first) Lancome skincare product that I have used, mostly I go to this brand for fragrance or color. I was happy enough with my deluxe sample to buy the full sized product after a week of use and I am looking forward to trying the other skincare products in the Bienfiat line. I am already thinking ahead to the summer months and I am betting that I will buy the lotion version from this line.

My first skincare purchase of the late fall/early winter months is the Lancome Bienfiar Multi-Vital SPF 30 Cream. I first tried this product in a Sephora skincare sample bag and liked it enough to buy it the other week at the Lancome counter. Murad Vitalic Energizing Pomegranate Moisturizer
The Murad Vitalic line is reported to be one their best-selling overall product lines, this line of anit-oxidant based skincare products can be used by a wide range of skin types and helps to fight the free radicals that have been all over beauty magazines for the past two years. The Vitalic line of skincare was my first introduction to the Murad line several years ago when I was in college and I have been using it ever since. I first bought a tube of this product when the Murad line was still available at certain Bath and Body Works and I made the trip down to King of Prussia one day to see the "fancy" store. This was one of my first clinical skincare products and I still remember how excited I was to buy this product!
The Vitalic line is a series of products that all contain pomegranate as one of the active ingredients and is an anti-oxidant rich line for all skin types. "Combination skin, also known as normal skin, is the most common skin type. It might be oilier in the T-Zone with perhaps some dryness at the perimeter of the face. Murad Vitalic line features pomegranate extract to balance oily and dry zones and creates beautiful skin through the science of Cellular Water.", states the Sephora website in an overall description of how the line itself functions. The line contains the full array of traditional skincare products; cleansers, moisturizers, and more targeted products. So far I have only used one product from the line however I have replaced it several times over the years, considering that I rarely rebuy products and am always on the lookout for the newest products and ingredients, this is saying something huge about this face lotion.
The main moisturizer in the Vitalic line is the Vitalic Energizing Pomegranate Moisturizer. "A lightweight moisturizer that infuses skin with hydration and energy. Stimulates and shields skin by infusing energy and providing oil-free, essential hydration." This product is a lightweight lotion, with a pleasant smell and very light texture, this is a product that I would use in the late spring and summer only, so I will not be buying another tube of for quite a bit. It provides enough hydration for my cheeks in the wamr weather months, but it is much too light for fall and winter months, since I am already beginning to feel the change in my skin and we are only halfway through September.
This is nice, but basic, moisturizer. The products in the Vitalic line are targeted for younger skin that really hasn't begun to show any major signs of aging, they help to prevent some of the signs of aging with the Murad Pomegranate Complex and wouldn't work very well in someone who already is beginning to show obvious signs (I would recommend the Vitamin C line for this type of skincare issue), this product is not going to change your world and it is not designed for someone who wants and needs major results from their moisturizer. I recommend this product for someone who truly has "normal" skin, it hydrates a bit but not too much and doesn't contain any mattifying ingredients.
My least favorite parts about this product? My first issue is the tube, somehow I can never squeeze out exactly how much product that I need. The tip is different from some of the other Murad products and one squeeze was never enough to cover my whole face but two squeezes released so much product that I still had some left on hands after application. This is the Goldilocks of Murad packaging... My second issue is the one that I often have with other Murad day creams, an SPF of 15 is way too low for me and this product is not applied heavily enough for the sunscreen to be fully opaque on the skin. I know that many people applaud doctors that put SPF in their products but having too low an SPF is worse than none at all, I prefer to find my own sunscreen formula to use and I can't layer it with this product without the higher SPF being diluted. So annoying in such a great line of facecare...

Korres Pomegrante Balancing Cream-Gel Moisturizer
Last week, I finished up my huge bottle of Clinique Dramatically Different Face Lotion, a product that I have been using on and off for almost an entire year. I debated just purchasing another bottle of it since I really liked its performance and the texture of the lotion but I deicded that I wanted to try something totally different this time around. When I made this decision, Sephora had recently released several new products from the homeopathic Greek skincare line, Korres. Korres is one of the few skincare lines that I have rarely found a product that disappointed me in how it performed. I have only used a few pieces from the color line of products however I have tried a variety of products from the skincare line. The newest product that I decided to order from the Sephora website is the Pomegranate Balancing Gel-Cream Moisturizer, a lighter hydrator that will work well in the warmer weather months.
This is a light to medium weight hydrator that also provides mattiyfing benefits to the skin. "A lightweight moisturizer that provides a matte finish and pore-minimizing properties while leaving skin soft, hydrated, and balanced. This pore-minimizing and mattifying moisturizer delivers immediate and lasting hydration while simultaneously balancing oily to combination complexions. The unique lightweight cream-gel texture is formulated with a blend of 15% pomegranate water, pomegranate extract, alpine willow herb, and contains tannins and polyphenols. These ingredients help reduce the appearance of pores and rejuvenate the look of skin while providing a matte finish. Hyaluronic and salicylic acids combine to offer an immediate moisture boost while conditioning skin for an overall smooth appearance."
The Sephora website provides some of the results that were observed during the clinical trails of this product.
- 88% of subjects saw an improvement in skin texture
- 84% of subjects saw a reduction in surface oil and said skin appeared more matte
- 78% of subjects saw a visible reduction in the appeance of pores
- 75% of subjects saw a noticeable reduction in the appearance of redness
So far, I have been using this product for about a week (only during the day, I have am using the last bit of my Benefit face cream at night), this is too light for me to use at night. My skin is becoming less dry with the advent of spring, however it still needs that dose of moisture at night and this product does not fully provide that intense moisture dose. This product works well at balancing my dry areas and helping to control the oil on my T-zone, providing limited mattifying benefits. The mattifying benefits in this product work well for slightly oily and combination skin but would not control the excess oil of very oily skin. I would not recommend this product for someone who has very oily skin, it will not mattify well enough to suit them.
This product contains pomegranate to help brighten and clear up my complexion, the redness in my cheek area is reduced but not completely eliminated. This face cream provides a great canvas for primer and foundation, I have had to use the same amount of face primer but a bit less foundation since I have been using this product. Of course with the pomegranate in this product, it is considered an anti-oxidant and will help to protect against future aging.
This product does have a definite scent, it is herbal and I find it quite pleasing but it will take away from the product for those who hate strong scents in their skincare. I can smell the pomegranate extract in this cream but also a herbal note of white tea. I like the scent of this product but it might be irritating to some, a lighter mix of the scent in this product would be my only suggestion for improvement.

French Week 2011 Day 6 - Caudalie Body Product Line
I have often raved about the facial skincare products from the French beauty product line Caudalie. They began as a facial skincar eline but over the years began to release matching body care products that also have the patented Vinotherapie ingredient blend that makes the facial products so effective. Caudalie has fantastic spas in major cities all over the world that provide both an amazing pampering experience and major skincare benefits. A visit to a Caudalie spa would be one of my dreams come true, especially if it the one in Bordeaux...
Bordeaux is a region that it located in the south west of France, a region that has another climate that is suited for farming and agriculture. The research and theories behind this company actually began back in 1993, when Mathilde and Bertrande Thomas met a scientist who introduced them to his theories around grape seed polyphenols and his predictions on how they would change the face of anti-aging is harnessed and used correctly. "Over the past decade, Caudalie has continued to wow us with their amazing scientific breakthroughs, revolutionizing the world of natural skincare in the process. From the groundbreaking discovery of grape seed polyphenols as exceptional anti-oxidants, which was patented in 1994, to the identification of Resveratrol, a polyphenol that activates cell renewal (patented in 1999), to their most recent innovation, Viniferine, a polyphenol isolated from the vine stalk that inhibits melanin synthesis (patented in 2004), each new Caudalie innovation proves to be even more impressive than the last.", states the Sephora website in their Behind the Brand area for Caudalie.
The stabilized Grape Seed Polyphenols help to fight the signs of aging. "Grape Seed Polyphenols are the most powerful anti-oxidants in the vegetable world. Extracted from grape seeds, they protect against free radicals that age the skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles." Resveratrol maintains the firmness and youthfulness of the skin. "In 1999, Caudalie patented Resveratrol, a remarkable molecule found in grapevine stalks responsible for its life span and longevity (Some vines live for a hundred years.). Caudalie researchers discovered this unique polyphenol also aids in cell renewal and restores skin firmness."
Mathilde herself actually lists the body lotion as one of her top picks from the entire product line. "For the body, Caudalie Nourishing Body Lotion is not only a great moisturizer, it also contains powerful anti-oxidants that protects your skin from free radicals, which slow down the aging process. It is also an iconic Caudalie product that can be used daily." The body product line contains two moisturizers for the body and one for the hand and nails. It also contains two body washes, one of which has the fragrance of my favorite Fleur de Vigne scent from this company.
The Nourishing Body Lotion is a favorite product of mine, I first bought it several years ago and have been continuning to use it ever since. "A rich, hydrating body treatment. Add and retain essential moisture as it promotes microcirculation and helps prevent premature skin aging. It leaves skin soft and firm." The Vine Body Butter is a new product that contains the same anti-oxidant treatment but is better for very dry skin. "A rich, deeply hydrating body moisturizer. Rich in moisturizing Vinolevure ultra-nourishing body butters, grape-seeds, and shea butter, this balm repairs dry skin with a protective hydrolipic film. It smoothes rough spots and soothes tightness. With the delicious scent of sweet orange zest, peach pulp, carrot, and iris, this cream wraps skin in a veil of satiny softness. In a four-week trial with volunteers, subjects had 65% hydration after 6 hours and a + 95% softer, more comfortable and intensely nourished skin."
The Hand and Nail Cream is one of the best products in the line. Hands show age faster than the face and therefore a strong anti-oxidant is needed to protect this area. "A cream for those who want a nourishing anti-aging treatment for hands and nails. Protects the skin against aging as it hydrates, soothes, and nourishes. Nails are strengthened and invigorated without a greasy film. Infused with a sweet orange fragrance, this cream is highly concentrated in patented anti-oxidant grapevine polyphenols and Vinolevure."
I bought both of the shower gels that come from the company, my favorite is the Fleur de Vigne but both scents are lovely. The Vine Peach shower gel is the one that I match with the body lotion, both have a light fruity scent to them. "A skin-softening, intoxicatingly-scented body cleanser. Gently cleanses, leaving the skin soft and subtly perfumed, while transforming your shower experience into a moment of total relaxation. Vine Peach fragrance: the sweetness of vine peach nectar and almond milk joined with the invigorating freshness of mint leaves. The "peche de vigne" (vine peach) has grown amidst the grapevines in the vineyards of France for generations. Because of its delicate fruit and irresistable aroma, the vine peach is used to lure insects away from the precious vines, protecting the vinter's crops. Paraben-, phenoxyethanol-, and soap-free. Not tested on animals."
I love the Caudalie body products just as much I love the face care line. The Caudalie products bring a bit of the French Vinotherapie experience to my bathroom. I really love the Nourishing Body Lotion in this line and am looking forward to buying the Body Butter for this fall and winter. If you use nothing else from this collection, I recommend the Hand and Nail Cream as you will reap the anti-oxidant benefits for your hands.

Caudalie Vinopure Purifying Mask
It's summer and now my skin has done a complete switch from how dry it is in the winter months. My favorite skincare line to return to in the warmer months is the Vinopure line from Caudalie, I have used products from this line for several summers now and have yet to really find products that suit me more. The moisturizer in this line I have already covered for this blog and I will quickly recap it. It provides a matte finish and helps to control oil without irritating my sensitive skin. It does have to be layered with an SPF which I prefer since then I can choose my own SPF number. Last time that I was at Sephora to pick up another tube of the moisturizer, I decided to add the face mask in this line to my purchase. I had tried a small sample of this product when the line was carried at Bath and Body Works and I remember liking it so I was more than happy to purchase the full size of the product.
Caudalie states the following about their product, "This non-drying, purifying mask eliminates complexion dulling impurities to brighten the skin. It cleanses deeply, tightens the pores, and regulates oil production. Specially created for combination skin, it is also suitable for all skin types even the most sensitive." This prosuct contains the following active ingredients: grape-seed oil; kaolin and bentonite clays; cypress, sage, and lavender oils; chamomile; sandalwood; and Vinolevure. The grape-seed oil and Vinolevure are the patented Caudalie ingredients that are anti-oxidants and help to improve the skin texture and condition. Kaolin and bentonite clays are purifying, help to control oil production and provide a matte finish. The essential oils of cypress and sage are purifying while the lavender helps to soothe skin and allow it to be suitable for sensitive skin types.
Caudalie recommends that this product be used twice a week, or even three times a week for oilier skin tones. It can also be used to treat individual blemishes when used as a spot treatment. I use this twice a week and only on my t-zone area, I have never tried it on my cheeks as I have no use for it on that area on my face. It really helps to clean out my pores and I like it best on my nose for helping to clean up and control blackheads. It can keep my skin oil-free for about two or three hours after use but it still comes back after that time. I find it best for clarifying my t-zone area keeping my skin bright and clean. My favorite way to use this product is as a spot treatement, traditional treatments with benzoyl peroxide can make my skin worse before it gets any better. I have to be very careful with the application and even then, I am often still left with a red, dry patch after the healing has occured. Dotted right on the blemish, it helps to clear it up and heal it. Blemishes are usually healed in about three days, longer than the healing time for other chemicals but I love that I don't have the irritation from this product. To be honest, it takes me longer than three or four days to get rid of the irritation so this product still comes out on top.
Another aspect of this product (and indeed the entire line of Caudalie products) is that it is safe for use by pregnant women. I have had many friends that experienced major changes in their skin over the nine months that they were expecting and they are unable to use any type of traditional chemical anti-acne product. This product is perfectly safe for them to use and allows them to have clear, even skin for their whole pregnancy. This is very unique feat for a skincare line and really drives home how well made the line is and how gentle their products are.
As usual, I have found another Caudalie product that I adore. I'm still waiting to find a product that I don't like in this collection. I love that I can finally use an anti-acne product that is effective and doesn't create more of a problem than the actual breakout.

C.O. Bigelow Lemon Lip Balm Collection
Bath and Body Works has been releasing new items like crazy the past few weeks but it seems like there has only been one new release from the C.O. Bigelow line and is from the Lemon Lip collection. The original Lemon stick lip balm is one of the few products that I have never tried and had used the Lemon Lip Cream instead. The Lip Cream is very soft and hydrating but I have found that it doesn't last at long as I would like it to. The Lip Balm stick seems to be a thicker hydrator and stays on much longer than the other formula.Bath and Body Works describes the original product with the following description. "Formulated with a high concentration of lemon oil and extract (3.5%), this addictive Lemon Lip Balm is packed with vitamins and minerals, providing a major dose of Vitamin C. 100% natural lemon flavor provides a tangy burst, while ultra-moisturizing shea butter (1%) nourishes and conditions lips. The creamy formula glides on smooth, leaving lips feeling soft and moisturized. Untinted balm prevents dryness and chapping while providing a dew-kissed sheen." The original is pure lemon and really moisturizes the lips. The stick is a bit more waxy then the cream but stays on much longer and helps to protect the lips in cold, harsh weather.
The original formula has been around for at least a year or two but this season, Bath and Body Works has brought out three new versions of it, all of which are the lemon mixed with berries. All of the new formula lip balms are anti-oxidant spiked to contribute to overall lip health and hydration. The first one is the Lemon and Raspberry blend which I thought was the lightest scent of the three. This one was my least favorite because the balm smelled strongly of lemon with very little raspberry mixed in. The second new fragrance is the Lemon and Blueberry. This one is a medium strength scent with a stronger scent of lemon. However, the blueberry is more prevalent in this one than the raspberry in the other. The last of the new balms is my favorite of the three. Lemon and Black Cherry is a great combination, more tart than the other two but the best mix of the two scents.
So far, I have bought the Lemon and Black Cherry mix but I do plan to purchase the original Lemon formula and maybe the blueberry one also in the near future. I am happy that this line of lip balms has come out to update the line for spring but I would be very happy if the Lemon and Black Cherry came out in an entire body product line. Hint, hint...

Murad Redness Therapy Correcting Moisturizer SPF 15
Normally, I am a Murad lady, I have used many products from this skincare line and had great results. I love Dr. Murad, his research, and all his products. Based on many positive experiences with his Vitamin C and Pomegranate based product lines, I decided to invest in his redness line when I went to Sephora over the holidays. I purchased the mositurizer, face cleanser, and serum and so far I have been using only the moisturizer. And for the first time with this company, I am not happy and am somewhat regretting purchasing this whole collection. Why? Let me explain...First I want to start with the description of the product from the Sephora website. "A patented, tinted lotion with soothing, moisturizing extracts. Reduces the appearance of red, rough, flaky skin on contact by neutralizing and protecting dry, irritated skin and minimzing the appearance of redness with a color correcting tint. Also shields against sun damage". The three active ingredients in this products are goji berry extract, licorice extract, and peppermint leaf extract. The goji berry is an antioxidant that reduces skin inflammation and helps to protect against free radical damage. The licorice extract helps to reduce surface redness and the peppermint leaf extract helps to relieve discomfort and stinging that is associated with red skin. The formula itself sounds good and I am a big fan of the goji berrry extract in his products. So what are the issues?
My two major issues with this product is the texture and the SPF protection. To start with the texture. This is a lotion formula, I need more of a cream especially this time of the year. This formula felt thinand wtery on application and was quickly absorbed into my skin but within about two hours, my skin has dry against and needed something else. I am thinking that this formula is better suited to someone with oily skin and that Murad might be better off if two hydrators were available in this line. He should keep the lotion for those with oily skin but also make a hydrating cream for those of us with dry skin. A cream in this line would rock my world and make me very happy. My second issue is the SPF, why is this only at a 15?! Most dermatologist recommend at least 30 or higher for more sensitive skin. I would rather this product had nothing SPF in it and then I could layer my own with it instead of only having the SPF 15. Ok, rant over!
What I did like about this product! It helps to control my redness especially in my cheek area and felt very nice on application. I had no issues with my face reacting to it. I like the antioxidant protection that this product offers. I think that I would be much happier just seeing this product in a cream formula and with a different SPF level. Looking at the two reasons that this product didn't work out for me still isn't stopping me from the rest of the Murad line. The wash and serum should be of the same formula and neither of those will have the SPF issues and I can layer them with a thicker hydrator.

C.O. Bigelow Green Tea Body Products
My nightly cup of green tea serves as the trigger that my body needs to start getting ready to go to sleep. The past few weeks I have needed it more than ever. I have been doing some late season spring cleaning and have decided to rearrange and organize my living quarters all before classes begin at the end of the month. Well, I never realized how stressful this could be. I have stuff all over the place and nothing is where I need it to be in the morning. So it doesn't take a genius to see why this new line of products from C. O. Bigelow grabbed my attention right away. This line contains bath and body products, a fragrance, and a lip gloss. First the fragrance. Normally, fragrances from this company have little lasting power and I can't imagine that this one is much different. I see this as more than a body spray than an EDT. I was able to get descriptions on all of the products from the Bath and Body Works website. "An inspired immersion of modern sensibility with apothecary heritage. Our clean, sparkling, sheer fragrance blends the essence of Sweet Citrus, intoxicating White spring Jasmine, and vibrant fresh Green Tea".
This line contains two moisturizers, a lotion and a thicker body cream. I love the pump bottles that C. O. Bigelow houses their lotions in since I can use it at the sink or after a bath. "Our ultra-light lotion is specially formulated to absorb quickly and leave skin feeling hydrated and replenished. Fragranced with an elegant and meditative blend of green tea leaves infused with effervescent citrus, delicate white florals, and exotic woods". I hope that the new Whipped Body Mousse in this line is the same texture as my favorite Lemon Body Cream. "Our light-as-silk, non-greasy formula has an extra-smooth texture and silky feel to deeply nourish and replenish skin. Fragranced with an elegant and meditative blend of green tea leaves infused with effervescent citrus, delicate white florals, and exotic woods".
There are also two shower products with this scent, a body wash and a body polish. I am looking forward to buying this body wash soon. "Our extra-light foaming, aromatic formula refreshes and cleanses for healthy and vibrant skin that looks revived and feels hydrated. Fragranced with an elegant and meditative blend of green tea leaves infused with effervescent citrus, delicate white florals, and exotic woods". The Body Polish is a gentle, sugar-based scrub. "Our antioxidant-infused scrub polishes skin with naturally exfoliating sugars while moisturizing oils help create soft, supple, and glowing skin. Fragrance with an elegant and meditative blend of green tea leaves infused with effervsecent citrus, delicate white florals, and exotic woods".
The last product in this collection is the lip gloss. "Our glossy lip balm incorporates green tea extract with anti-oxidants to provide a high gloss finish that leaves lips feeling moisturized. Usage: Smooth over lips for a refreshing rush of extra shine".
I want all of it. And if it's limited edition, I will be buying back-ups of it at Sale. Hopefully by the time that we hit Sale, my reorganization project will only be a memory.

Smart Girls Who Surf Suncare Products
As I mentioned earlier this week, this is a beach weekend at the Jersey shore (GLT anyone?!) and I need sun protection products that are going to stand up to the elements. I am not the girl that just lays on her towel when I go the beach. I'm the girl that is in and out of the water and who is always running around and playing in the sand. So I heavy duty suncare and Smart Girls Who Surf is right up my alley. Now, I cannot surf but have always wanted to go to Southern California and learn so this line also allows me to pretend that I am California girl (cue the Katy Perry music).Smart Girls Who Surf is a natural skincare line based out of Laguna Beach and they pride themsleves on using natural and organic products that will not hurt the environment. A unique aspect of this line is that they are aware that anything that is on your skin when you go swimming will end up in the ocean so they strive to make products that do no harm the fragile ocean environment and ecosystem. Man, I need to move to Southern California...
The first product that I want from this company is the After Sun Soothing Lotion. As I said the other day, my skin always feels dry after I get in from outside and I need products that can help correct this issue. "Hydrate and nourish your overexposed, dry skin. Smart Girls Who Surf hydrating body lotion will revitalize your overexposed dry skin after a long day at the beach or pool. Specially enriched with organic aloe, green tea extract, and anti-oxidants (vitamins A, B5, and C), this all natural formula will leave your skin feeling hydrated and nourished. You will once again have healthy skin! This is the best lotion for dry skin. Paraben free. Water resistant and sweat resistant. Hypo-allergenic for face and body. Perfect for sensitive skin. Light kiwi scent". I need to add this to my collection. I am also wondering if after sun lotions will help my fake tan since I feel like the DHA in some formula drys my skin out. Time to experiment...
The next item that I need from this company in order to no become a lobster at the beach is the SPF 30 Chemical Free Sunblock. Chemical free means that it shouldn't irritate my skin and that I will actually want to use it. "Our Smart Girls Who Surf Chemical Free SPF 30+ Sunscreen has broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection and is formulated with Zinc Oxide (5%) and titanium dioxide (7%) and fortified with green tea extract, provitamin B5, C, and vitamin E. This sunscreen is sweat resistant, water resistant, won't sting your eyes and is chemical free and paraben free. This is the best sunscreen for your body and it is environmentally friendly!"
I have never even thought about the products that I swear on my skin getting into the ocean and about the effect that they might have on it. I need to try these out and get away from my chemical sunscreens. So I am going to take a chance and order them and hope they are as amazing as they sound!

French Week 2010 Day 4 - Caudalie Vinoperfect Serum
Last year, I talked about the Caudalie skincare line and how their patented active ingredients work to help repair and protect skin. I will not repeat all of that information here again. Today, we are going to look at my favorite product from Caudalie and the one that I have repurchased the highest amount of times since I was initially given one from the Caudalie rep about 4 years about. The product that I am referring to today is the Vinoperfect Radiance Serum, a product that contains a high amount of anti-oxidants to improve the clarity and overall radiance of the face.Vinoperfect is one of the few brightening serums that doesn't contain bleaching agents and therefore can be used by everyone, even expectant mothers. The Caudalie website states, "This satiny serum is a remarkable formula for smoother, brighter-looking skin. Vinoperfect boosts the complexion's radiance and appearance. Your skin is moisturized and luminous. Your complexion looks even and beautifully radiant".
This product is ideal for all skin types and is formulated for those who wish to enhance their skin's radiance, tone, and clarity. This product was recommended to me from the Caudalie rep to help even out my skin tone and reduce the appearence of the redness in my cheek area. This product is able to do all that effectively while not irritating my sensitive skin or drying any areas of my face out.
This product really was able to reduce the redness in my cheek area and made my skin look much better overall. The clarity was much improved and I was getting compliments on my fantastic skin, even when I didn't put makeup on.
This product contains a very high amount of viniferine, 1000 ppm, to improve the tone and clarity. it also contains olive squalene, mint, caraway, and galbanum. The product smells like wild mint leaves so using it is a pleasure. It is recommended for use morning and night on freshly cleansed skin. however, if you are also using another Caudalie serum (anti-aging), then this product is to be used at night and the other serum used in the morning.
This product is unique to the areas in France that can support vineyards and wine production. The French have long know the benefits of grapes and wine before it became popular in the United States. I have nothing but amazing things to say about how this product affected my skin. Caudalie has enhanced the results of this product and had made it into an entire line of skincare for normal skin. With or without the whole line of skincare, this product is a stand alone star.

Caudalie Instant Foaming Face Cleanser
It's hot, it's humid, and it's going to be even worse tommorrow and over the next few days. Thoughts of creamy skincare products make me want to gag right now since nothing is absorbing fully into my skin. All I want to use is light-as-air products and sunblock. I even have no love for the feeling of my serums on my face. And I love my serums and have to use them to survive. However, I can easily adapt my face cleanser to this weather. Luckily, I have a favorite warm weather face wash from Caudalie that I started using several years ago.I first received this as a sample from the Caudalie rep but have been purchasing it at Sephora ever since. Sephora defines this product as, "A soap-free liquid cleanser that transforms into an airy foam for a pleasurable, gentle cleansing experience". This description contains two of my favorite words right now: airy and foam.
Sephora goes on with a more detailed description of this product. "A naturally effective blend of grape extracts, sage, and chamomile provide vitamins, purifying benefits, and soothing extracts, removing makeup and impurities while improving overall complexion wellbeing. From the first use, the complexion is immaculate, toned, and radiant. This delightful wash works for all skin types, and is especially tuned to the needs of combination and sensitive skin".
I love this wash, this is one of my favorite Caudalie products of all time. It doesn't irritate or overdry my skin (though I wouldn't really recommend it for drier skin types). It smells faintly floral and the foam is light and fluffy and very easy to fully rinse off. I have found that it gets all of my face makeup off but I don't use it to get my eye makeup off. This product contains the signature Caudalie blend of anti-oxidant ingredients and is very healthy for your skin. This is a great recommendation for a light summer product if you have normal, combination, or oily skin.
